He raps like a mumbling old man, hes kind of ugly and he can't sing. I must be missing something.

Jay-Z is one of the more competent rappers.

The better question is, why are these fuck tards like souljaboy and lilwayne popular.

I really don't like lil wayne all that much but the guy has some talent, you've got to admit it. soulja boy on the other hand, completely worthless shit.

Jay Z is a lyrical genius, I think a lot of his fame surrounds the 'beef' between him and NAS who is also on the same level lyrically.

Collaborations.

I don't see him being that great a rapper, honestly.
Well, maybe compared to some of the other top mainstream rappers, yeah.

Smart guy. Plus, I actually like some of his music, sounds like old rap music, which is the only good kind.

I like Jay-Z because I can understand him. I mean, understand the words. My roommie listens to rap almost exclusively and I have no idea what they are saying most of the time. Jay-Z just flows really well in his rhymes.

I actually didn't listen to anything of his after the Black Album because he made such a big deal of retiring. If he was going to make such a huge deal out of retiring and what the rap scene was going to do without him, I didn't need to support him when he came out of retirement. However, the roommie had me listen to Blueprint 3 in his car and I couldn't say no. Run This Town and Empire State of Mind are amazing songs on just about any level.

So there ya have it, why Jay-z is so popular according to Adam.

Talent for being a felon? THUG LIFE YO!

The guy grew up in the hood and now has more than all of ATOT combined. He has the best selling rap album of 2008. He moved 1,000,000 copies in one week.

And how he records is amazing too. He does that same no paper rhyme that Jay does. Pretty amazing.

In the words of Jay himself: "men lie, women lie, numbers don't"

As far as jay is concerned, "and all you other cats throwing shots at jigga, you only get half a bar, fuck ya'll __________"

It's clever lines like that and a solid flow that make him so damn good. And he's an amazing performer live, which is lost on most rappers.

So because he is better than trash that makes him deserving?

Your assumption that I believe that any form of rap that isn't gangster rap is deserving is false.

And judging from your tone of response, everyone can clearly see you're narrow-minded and unappreciative of other people's opinions. Enjoy.
