How is it to rip DVD's into a VCD?

I'm thinking of getting a DVD player for my computer to convert DVD's to VCD or SVCD. We have a DVD player downstairs but my parents only have a VCD (4.99$ in taiwan!) player in their bedroom upstairs. If I were to get one how easy is it to rip and encode?

It's not hard. I use Smartripper to rip the VOB files off the DVD, then make a project file with DVD2AVI, load that into TMPGEnc and encode.

Just follow the guide here.

I've used dvd2svcd to make svcd's. It has an option for vcd and I assume it's there because it works for vcd's too. Very easy to set up and once you've made your selections just push a button and leave your computer alone for about 12 hours. You won't be able to use it without messing up the program. See the guide at doom9.net. Use Nero to burn the vcd.
