How is it HL2 runs so much smoother than Doom3?

On my system with 9800pro doom3 stutters, slowdowns etc...running at 640x480, turned down stuff plus used console commands to 'optimize' it...still crappy.

In HL2, runs smooth, everything looks nice, running at 1024x768.

id must suck at this new code coz its seems so bloated and character animations suck compared to HL2.

You're comparing two different game engines with different graphics, physics, etc. Naturally, they're going to run differently on the same machine. Not to mention the other variables like your video card.

wrong..i have played almost all id games, never finished any valve games before...not even HL, CS..
when i got doom3 i thought 'why does this suck?' and 10minutes into HL2 i thought 'why does this rock?'.
capische?..catfish?

Haha. Well i can't agree with your opinion, but its yours to have.

With those specs you should be able to play doom just fine. You might not be able to run high quality without lvl sudders, do to only having 768 of ram, but it should be playable. I would say you have some other sort of problem on your PC if your having that big of problems.

I have similar stats to yours.. little lesser card but more ram and they both play just fine on mine. I can only run 800x600 with doom, and 1024x768 with HL2. But then again if i had an Nvidia card the situation would be reversed. Not sure whos fault that is... prob both the game makers and the video card people.

since when does one need 1 gig of memory to play a fvcking game?
i must be in the boondocks.

plus a lot of HL2 that i have seen are outdoors, huge environments...no probs.
doom3 is mostly close quarters and still damn stutters every now and then. plus i even
extracted ALL those 'pak' files as suggested so the 'puter dun have to do it.

Doom3 engine > Source engine

Play Vampire Bloodlines and you see how bad the Source engine looks with normal textures. Valve used some really good texture work to hide the fact that the geometry is pretty simple. Doom3 levels are a lot more complex and there is a lot beating on the GPU like the lighting engine.

yea the whole 'lets show you 25% of the screen by making the game in darkness with a little flashlight' kind of shows that. not to mention, then you run a mod that makes the flashlight radius bigger, the game starts to run like crap.

i think the route that valve went was actually better. performance makes the gameplay, not the graphics. not to mention the graphics in HL2 are incredible (as are doom)

You must be. I suggest everyone have 1 gig of ram for the new games that are out and coming out. More complex games need more hardware. For good or bad, thats the way it always goes. You can still play without a gig of ram, just need to turn down the quality settings.... and everything else the other people already said.

it never hurts to have more ram. you should have gotten in on that $40 AR deal at oupost.

kinda reminds me of the age old quake3 vs UT graphics debate. doom3 had way more polygons to boot, but UT did look pretty good for its time.

Not just performance, but visuals go a long way. Doom3 only looks "technically" better than HL2 because of the lighting and bump-mapping. Artistically, HL2 blows Doom3 away and that's all that really matters when you are playing the game. Valve allowed HL2 to not only look great, but to play on modest hardware. Great work!

Both the words 'boondocks' and 'nincompoop' in the same thread. The antichrist approaches!!!!!
