How is forum browsing on an e-reader (kindle or nook)

Yeah the web experience is pretty low I know, but what about forums such as this one? Would be convenient to do spot checks on some forums while at lunch or something, rather than having to whip out my phone or netbook.

I assume there is a way to disable images? Assuming that it even displays them in the first place.

I find it usable on the nook. The color touch screen is what makes it usable.

Web browsing on an e-ink screen is a disaster. The technology is great for reading books, magazines, newspapers, etc, but a complete mess for web browsing because of its slow refresh rate. If you want to web browse on the go, you are far better off with a 4in+ smart phone.

I am thinking that for reading forums the larger screen of the nook/kindle would be better than than 4 inch smart phone.

They do display images, they just get converted to grayscale.

Right, but was really looking for feedback on forum viewing. As they are heavily text based, figured it would be a slight improvement over a 3" or so smartphone.

Plus it would help narrow down between a Kindle or Nook, as only the Kindle does the browsing thing over 3G, right?

I dont think either the kindle or the nook browse over 3g. I think 3g is only used for browsing books for purchase on both platforms.

I think the nook would work better because of the color touch screen. It's not great though, but usable if you've got nothing else.

Between the two, I prefer browsing around with my Droid.

Edit: can't browse over 3G with the nook. Browsing is okay, but way slower than on the phone.

More recently the Kindle was opened up all the way on AT&T wireless, not just for the Kindle store.

That's my understanding anyway.

The refresh rate on the eink displays make the web browsers pretty terrible IMO. I used mine when I first got my Nook wifi and immediately wrote it off as an extraneous included gimmick. I would never use it to browse the web, especially since I have an iphone.
