i just don't see how they are profitable, or breaking even - much like youtube.

when checking out my friend's weekend in italy, i have no interest in clicking on ads. heck, i don't even notice any ads.

anyone else see it failing in the very near future?
i mean, it's as popular as ever, but popularity doesn't pay the bills.

millions of photos and videos = lots of servers = $$$

They are not profitable as a business unto itself, but it's worth maintaining for the insanely useful marketing data that results from knowing absolutely everything about tens of millions of people - including their exact media and product likes and dislikes, who they associate with, where exactly they live, etc. Nobody is dumb enough to throw that away because of server and bandwidth costs.

Yep. Just think of all the people that are playing some of the games on Facebook like Mafia Wars buying Godfather points and clicking on all the junk ads to get more Godfather points. Facebook gets a cut of that. I think about half my office is addicted to that game alone.

I visited an AD on AT that was for a tri-channel 3x2GB ram but didn't buy it. I think it was the first AD I actually clicked (on purpose) to check it out in the last 15 years on the internet.

I have actually clicked on a few of the ads. Sometimes an ad will be about of my favourite bands or TV shows (taken from my info page) that I am interested in and want to check out. *gasp* Internet advertising that actually works?
