  • Played BF1942, loved it. More strategy/conflict/objective based than anything. Desert Combat and Galactic Conquest were awesome.
  • Played BF:Vietname...meh. Helicopters/towing were cool but I just didn't like the theater.
  • Played BF:2. Loved it. Was an admin on one of the top servers in the world (Full Contact War). Ranks and badges took a lot of work to get and seemed...genuine?
  • Played BF:BC2. Was okay, was using it as a stopgap between BF2 and BF3. Didn't like that there was no prone or jets, and the fact that the server size was tiny...but loved the destruction. Thought the badges and leveling were stupid.
  • Played BF:3. Hated it. Seemed more actiony than any of the other games. Flying with a joystick and throttle? Sorry you're gimped! Throttle didn't incorporate brake, just idle (Unlike Mouse/KB pilots). Seemed to focus purely on individual weapons and attachments rather than classes. Too many guns, too many addons, too many badges/pins/"Good job, you shot someone" awards. Graphics were good but not that much better than BC2. Just seemed like they added blue tint and super HDR/lens flare.
Needless to say I skipped BF4. BF2 was the highlight of the series for me.

I logged over 969 hours playing BF3 but haven't touched it since BF4's release. There isnt a whole lot of difference between the two as far as gameplay, but BF4 is more polished. Things were a little wonky with the server tick rates for a while, but that was patched and now all is well, but to each their own.

You are lucky. I bought BF3 premium in Jan. of 2013 and its still unopened. Never even played 1 minute of the game. Won't be getting BF4 either. Just can't find the time and money to build a fancy new gaming system. Even have a 2GB 7850 and 128mb Samsung Pro collecting dust as well.

I am sort of in the same boat, but I'd rather not go back to WW2 shooters. I am so tired of killing Nazis. What other eras are there? Futuristic? That is quite hard to do. Civil War period? No thanks... Korean War / Vietnam era is modern enough (and, because of BC2, holds a place in my heart), but that doesn't really distinguish itself much from modern warfare.
Well, this is why I am partial to sci-fi stuff.

Unpopular opinion alert...

All modern warfare FPS's are fooking boring/lame, that includes the legendary coveted BF2. Halo 1 multiplayer was the peak of fun FPS... for me anyways.

Oh and before you assume im crap my KDR's were typically above 1.9/2.0 in BF games :awe:

I think Halo was a good evolution of an arena style shooter of the past, just with a regeneration factor rather than forcing health. Halo 2, IMO, evolved that further and better. Plus, it had the best maps of the series.

what about ME3 ? i think it's fun, for a while anyways!

So if you say "all modern FPS's are boring" i hope you don't find MMO's fun? this is the epitome of boredom and barbie dressing contests.

So which video games or which genre do you enjoy these days?

That's...part of the problem. That Mass Effect is considered a "FPS" (it's really a 3PS, to be technical ;)) is a shame.

Not to derail this thread, but taking an RPG with light action elements and turning it into an action shooter with light RPG elements doesn't a good game make.

Doesn't matter because I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Yea, until the ending spoiled the entire franchise spanning 3 games.

Death comes very quickly and without much warning most of the time.

The vehicles are clunky to handle.

The maps are so big that you spend the bulk of your time running.

Yeah, I'm not much into tactical shooters or 64-player games either. But I know better than to make an anti-Battlefield game when the fanboys are in full effect.

ME3 had multiplayer? :hmm:

MMO's are meh, only tried 1 though. Got into WoW a while back (PvP server naturally), stuck with it for about 2 months then beating the crap out of lower level newbs and grinding got really old quickly.

Free to play stuff like league of legends and world of tanks have filled the gap where FPS (and RTS) once was, for me anyways.

I forgot all about 2142, I played that but couldn't stand the lag/warping that would happen on those floating ships...

Onward! Back to the future!
:D

Honestly, that's the only option. They already murdered the WWI/WWII theme. There is no escaping the fact that FPS era themes no longer matter, because they have all been played out. Sci-fi/futuristic, modern, historical, medieval even... we've had it all. At first, with the modern style of graphically-intensive gaming, it was all fairly new. Now, however, all the themes have been visited with modern graphics, so it'll be impossible to ever truly feel like an FPS is absolutely fresh on all fronts.
Nope! Time for me to strap on some motion capture gear, fire up the old muzzle loaders, and make myself a gaming tycoon. Oh, yeah! Giggitity! Giggitity!

If that's all the effort you put into it there is no wonder you spend more time dead and respawning. Not sure how 32 real humans trying to kill you in real time is shallow and boring, but being able to freeze time and target specific body parts while you eat a sammich isn't...
LMAO

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are my favorite games, but unless heavily modded shooter mechanics are Farmville horrid. Low level/skill - run up to enemy, press rifle against nose, and watch your bullets curve around him. High level/skill - run up to enemy, press rifle against nose, and empty seventeen magazines into his unprotected face while blood flies and he does the same to you. Then take out another of the seventeen identical weapons you carry since this recently pristine example is now nearly broken from the single firefight.

Or, just enter VATS and watch the game play itself for you. You can even get a mysterious stranger to appear in VATS, just in case moving and clicking that mouse on the immobile target is simply too much fun to handle.

Heavily modded, Fallout 3 and New Vegas can have fun combat. As delivered, enduring Fallout 3 and New Vegas combat is its own survival challenge.

I used to play it a bit. I'd hide behind couches and stuff at the typical camping sites and wait for a large enough group to start sniping and then take them out.
