How is a 1.1 GHZ T-Bird Compared to a Duron 600/700, worth it?

Hi All, more of a long time reader but first time poster. Due to great reviews im gonna go with the AT7 or the AT7-Riad.

Anyways im confused if I should go ahead and spend all my savings on a t-bird 1.1 GHZ system(witch I have no problem with, if it's performace is far better than other chips).

Or if I should just go ahead and get a 600/700 and shoot for 1GHZ.

how much dif is there between a 700 DURON@1GHZ, and a 1.1 GHZ T-Bird or
how much dif is there between a 750 T-Bird@1GHZ, and a 1.1 GHZ T-Bird.

Also what is the best video card to date for these setup.

I know these questions are asked over and over, just trying to get latest of opinions..

THanks a TOn.

Are you comfortable with overclocking? If so, do this:

Find out the duron most ppl agree OCs the best (600/700 I believe, I'm a Tbird owner). Take the average of that OC (prolly 900-950 I would guess). Subtract about 10% (duron is about that much slower than TB).

Find out the duron most ppl agree OCs the best (700-800 I believe is my oponion). Take the average of that OC (prolly 900-950 I would guess).

Find the lowest costs of each of those, and the Tbird 1.1 ghz. Divide each by the lowest price you can find. That gives you a performance/price ratio. Higher the better. I think you will find that it is fairly close between the tbird and duron systems, with the 1.1 ghz severley lagging.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, if you are NOT comfortable with overclocking, get comfortable :p

Just kidding, just do the same process as above but instead of using average overclocked speeds, just take the core speed you are looking at.

EDIT2: Missed half your post, I'm dreary-eyed. The difference between a processor overclocked to 1ghz and a processor running @ 1.1gzh core is just in processor life. If you get the cheap one though, you won't care because in 6 months you can buy another.

Here's my opinion...

Whatever you have now, I'm sure something like an Athlon 800 will be faster than it (guessing). If you spend 150 on that, you will be happy because damn, it's fast.

When you get bored with that, spend another 150 in 6 months and get what, maybe 1ghz by then? Who knows. Anyway, you will have spent 300 and had the pleasure of upgrading (Upgrading is ALWAYS fun)

Or, you can spend 600 now and get the same chip you will in 6 months but you'll have to go the entire time without upgrading. Upgrading is fun.. upgrading is fun.

Buying the fastest is always a lose-lose situation with hardware. Take it in steps and you can be assured you got the best bang for the buck, plus you get to do it more often which if you're into systems, is fun on its own.

Well, there's no harm in spending about $50 now for a cheap Duron which would give you nearly the same performance as the top line TBirds now. Wait for faster TBirds to come out then grab them.

Wow thanks guys for the help.

First overlclocking... I've done it before, Im not a pro but have alot of friends that can take care of that problem for me, if needs be. Or I can figure it out on my own.

Well heres my situation, like I said I saved this money to use it on a ultimate system. So what is the Ultimate system these days? I even thought about building a dual p3 system, but intel isnt doing to hot, and I prefer AMD.

I know I can wait a few months and go with a dual amd board, with ddr memory or something like that, but I rather get something now, spending 700 for a 1.1 GHZ is pretty dumb, but if im looking for the more powerfull system I can get today, what is my best option. I have saved $2300 for this, so what is my best bet. I dont want to waste this hard earned money.

THanks A Ton

I had a Duron 600 @ 950...I now have a Thunderbird 1ghz. I CAN tell the difference, and I would buy a thunderbird again if I had to make the choice.

Even at the same clock speed, I could tell the difference in games when lots starts to happen with detail way up there.

What about the new duron 800, should I wait like a week or two and go for that, and plan to overclock that with 128k l2 cache?

Sorry for all the questions, but in both cases, whats the best current CPU cooler for Duron going for maximum overclockabilty, and whats the best cooler for a 1GHZ-1.1GHZ T-Bird, no overclockabilty?

To summarize, buy a Duron now, get a Mustang later. I have a Duron 600 with a KT7 and I have it clocked at 105*9.5=1000MHz with no problems whatsoever. With a Duron 700, you'll probably be able to go even higher, but not by much because the max voltage will start holding you back, from going too high. You can up the max voltage by soldering a resistor to your motherboard, but I'm too much of a wimp to try that. This is with a Vantec Socket A HS and a Delta 60mm fan (which is quite noisy). The main reason why you should not sink your money into the Tbird 1.1GHz is because you can just pay $75 for a Duron 700MHz, overclock it easily to at least 1GHz, and have the extra few hundered dollars for when the Mustang gets into a reasonable price range. Around March, you should be able to get an at least 1.3GHz Mustang for the few hundered that you saved and you will be happy that you went with the duron initially. You probably don't need the performance difference between a Duron 1GHz and a Tbird 1.1GHz, right now anyway.

Yeah your prob righ, I'll prob go ahead and get a cheapo duron.

Ohh also, if you get a kt7 raid, are you getting anything else other than the extra raid controllers?

If not, im gonna go kt7 or a7v, and buy my own faster scsi raid controller...

get Duron 600/650 and overclock that

wait a bit further for the Tbird with the DDR ram

if you're playing games at high res the process matters less than the video card. anand has some good graphs of this, even a normally clocked duron 600 is 6 fps behind a 1ghz p3/athlon at 1280x1024x32 (or something like that). overclocking just makes the duron sweeter. my advice: don't blow all your money in one swoop, there will be something a few months down the line you'll want. the only part to spend lots of money on is the monitor, since you'll have that for years. a nice 19" flat crt, either vega trinitron or an fst viewsonic, would be something to be pleased with for a long time.
