how is 512kbps net connection for online gaming n which game to MP: BFBC2 or MW2?

ok guys so i'm gonna be trying multi player in any game for the first time ever....so which game do you suggest n has better experience amongst the two?.....i've already completed single player campaigns of both ........

also is the net connection of 512 kbps good for gaming??....i mean the real time downloading i get is average 60 kbps.....

BFBC2 by far in my opinion.

The bandwidth is sufficient provided you have the same amount of upload. What you need to worry about is your latency more than anything else.

I used to play it fine when I still had 256k up, I got a faster connection thereafter and it hasn't made much difference. You latency shouldn't be affected. I don't think anyone, but pirates are playing MW2 now.

ehh?....wat exactly does latency mean?....(i'm not ashamed to look like a fool to u when i'm asking this ...but i really dont know wat it means even if it's too obvious....watever)

Latency basically means how long it takes for the data to go from server and back to you.

Bandwidth is a holdover from other tech, and refers to transfer rates. How much data you can move up or down.

Latency refers to how long it takes to move the data from your PC to the server, and for the server to communicate back to your PC. It is measured in milliseconds, typically, and is typically measured by the total round trip, referred to as ping time.

Many DSL networks, which haven't been upgraded like they aught to have been, will often take longer for your PC to communicate to the server than it takes for the server's information to get back to your PC--often varying time by the second--and this can cause issues for fast-paced games.

Should it cause problems, cable internet is generally the solution.

Ping is generally what it is. If people in game say "omg ur ping sux teh big one!!!11" it means you have high latency. Most games have a way to tell your ping to other people and typically color code it with green for good yellow for okayish or red for bad. 0-150 ping is good, 150-300 is a bit crap, 300+ and the game will be noticeably slower and not much fun.

Location matters too so if you even if you have the best connection in the world but the bad company 2 server you are trying to join is located say on the moon you will have a poor latency to it and a laggy game. :thumbsdown:

Imagine a pipe with water flowing through it. If the pipe is 1" in diameter, then you know it can have less water in it than a pipe 2" in diameter. This is similar to a bandwidth comparison. Latency is the time it takes the water to get from one end of the pipe to the other. Assuming that you're dumping water into the pipe and it's flowing 1 foot down and leaving the pipe in both cases the travel time will be the same (gravity), and the size of the pipe only matters if you're pouring in more water than the 1" pipe can handle at a given time.

Most online games use little bandwidth, and it's the latency that really matters. 512mbps might not be enough bandwidth but I suspect it is for many many games.

As stated above DSL often has poor latency but it varies greatly. I personally switched to cable 2 months ago because my latency was so poor.

I hate when people say a game is lagging bad when they are actually talking about graphics lag and can't compute the two different things.

My guess is that your connection will be fine. One of the good (or bad from my perspective) things about modern FPS games is that you don't notice the latency quite as much because they have random spread built into weapon fire. It's not quite so obvious if you go from 50ms to 70ms, but if your latency is above 120ms you will still be at something of a disadvantage. In the older games bullets went exactly where you aimed and consistent latency was just as important as low latency.

I'm on Comcast Economy Internet which means I get something like 1mb down and 128kb up. No issues playing BFBC2, it's all about latency.

ok .... so how do i find the latency for my connection?.....

the modem is ZXDSL 531B from ZTE and since i live in india the ISP is BSNL.

I have a fast connection now and I can still be kicked from BFBC2 games, a lot depends on how close you are to which server you choose to play on. In the past I had a much slower connection similar to the OP and never had issues playing BF2 or similar games as long as I chose a server with a good ping.

eh ...guys...when i'm running the ping test on the nearest best server chosen by site itself, it says the packet loss test failed....n the ultimate grade given is C or D with a star marked with it........... how do i get the packet loss test to run properly?
