Flying alone shouldn't be a problem...and you're really lucky to have a whole fund for you to get down there, yeesh :)

If time is precious to you, fly.

If you have nothing else better to do, drive it and see America while you are at it.

If you want to see boring I suggest you take the drive in between Northern California and Southern California. A nice 8 hours or so of nothingness! It's so straight and flat, that its TOO boring. :p

You've obviously never driven I-80 across Nebraska. That is the most mindnumbingly boring, monotonous stretch of road ever constructed during the history of mankind. Every single mile of it is exactly the same. There are no hills. There are no turns. There are no trees. There is nothing. There is just corn and flat for 400 miles.

dcdomain - what 8hours drive are you talking about? It only takes 6 to go from San Francisco to LA and certainly not all of it is without scenery. Maybe half of it is uninteresting. I'm going to have to take highway 1 down the coast one of these days when I have a little extra time.

Nebraska is definately much much worse.

Anyone ever get road hallucinations when you've been driving too long at night?

Fartherest I've driven is Montreal to Toronto and back (6 and a half hour drive one way). With two drivers, No stops to sleep. Stayed in Toronto an hour and drove back.

It was long. I lost patience on the way back to and cruised at 118mph (180km/h) in my civic for a couple hours. I'm amazed I didn't get pulled over :p.

Anyways, if you have the patiences then it's probably all good. I know i don't have enough to do anything much farther.

Nope, I didn't say anything about Cali... I was talking about the drive from Pittsburgh to Texas. I think you are talking about the person who quoted me...

This past January 2nd, I drove from Savannah, GA to Philadelphia, PA, picked up a van, drove it to Springfield, VA, where we flushed the transmission, balanced and rotated the tires, changed the oil, ate dinner with my brother, and then drove back to Savannah. I did take a 2 hr. nap in southern Virginia on the way back. Wasn't too terrible a trip.

that's different... now you hit my mom switch.

17.. you can't go to georgia and get in a car with a stranger you met on the internet and ride to texas and share a room with another stranger you met on the internet who, along with a group of others, are paying your way. sorry.. nope.. you can't do that.

17.. you gotta fly, you gotta take at least one friend with you, there has to be hotel transportation from the airport and you gotta room with the friend.

Yeah, I agree. The only problem is I don't know who would want to go with me. My mom is out and my dad isn't interested either. My brother ain't and I highly doubt my sister could take off a week of work. Hmmm. What do I do?!

how 'bout some of those local lan party friends.. and maybe, ideally, a parent or older brother of one of 'em. I'm not sure you're gonna have great luck getting a hotel to rent a couple under 18's a room even.. be best if you had someone older, someone older that you know and trust, along. be easier to get permission to go that way too!
