How insane would it be to drive down to Texas from Pennsylvania?

Ha, I have a friend that drives non stop from Dallas to Detroit 2x a year. He says that he's done the whole trip and only stopped for gas and didn't even go to the bathroom :Q

I drive solo from Chicago to western South Dakota all the time. Piece of cake. I have it down so I can drive the 860 miles in ~12.5 hours. I make two 10 minute stops along the way for gas/bathroom.

And mapquest claims it'll take 14 hours, 5 minutes. Bah! :p

The farthest I've ever gone is from Chicago to Spokane in 2 days. If you just get in the car and go you'll be there in no time!!

Hey, Idnut, I'll trade you!! On the 11th, I get to drive with the wife and two kids (5 & 7) from Houston up to Portland, OR, with a 2-day foray up into WA, and then back again. Inside a Chevy Corsica. Please. Either trade me or shoot me!!:(

If you drive straight through, it will take you in the neighborhood of 40 hours. If you have two other people to split the driving time with, this is quite doable.

The drive shouldn't be that bad. Definitely remember to stop and stretch, don't want any clots forming.
PA to New Orleans was about 30hours, not too bad. Tenesse is boring as fvck though.
Tennessee is the best state to drive through. Nice mountains and rolling hills. I40 through TN is well maintained. At least we don't have toll roads here in TN. Nothing worse than paying a toll to drive on road that is in worse shape than a non toll road.

it's not that bad of a drive.. but if you're doing it alone, i'd think it'd suck. i sure wouldn't want to. but then again, i definately wouldn't want my computer on a plane....

The most i've done in one shot is from SW Louisiana to Northern Indiana.

1100 miles in 16.5 hours, stopping only for gas.... :)

It's not too bad, but I wouldn't do it again. I drive down to Texas (UT Austin) last year for my national convention.

From Pittsburgh, I drove to NYC to pick up a brother, then drove back to Pittsburgh (that's 800 miles round trip right there). Then from Pittsburgh drove down to UT (24 hours straight, stopped for gas, that was it). It was me and one of my other brothers doing the driving, switched off every six hours or so...

But I would never do it again if asked... such a boring drive.

Or swallow your irrational fear of flying and fly X-Fare to Atlanta for $60 and take that dude up on his offer to drive you.

In 2001, my wife and I drove from AZ to PA and back to get her things when she moved out here after grad school. The drive was fun. Definitely an adventure...we have lots of great memories. If we weren't picking up her things, we would have flown. We fly every time we visit now. Her relatives all live in PA, and all except her mom will never come here because they can't fly.

What is it with PA people that they are afraid of planes? Her best friend lives in FL now, and her mom won't fly there either. At first, I thought it was a coincedence, but it's starting to become a phenomenon. Nine out of ten people from PA have a fear of flying. And it's worse for Western PA than Eastern.

I don't mean to tease you about your phobia, I just find it interesting.

Do you think I'd be okay alone and only 17 flying/riding around the country? No car and my computer, I'm a winner.

Wife and I did Kansas to Washington state in just over 26 hours straight with about a two hour stop at a rest stop in Montana.

After looking at the route and plugging in some rough estimates into Expedia, you guys are weenies! Two days for that trip? Hell, I drove longer than that by myself with no sleep!!! I did Kansas to Georgia straight through by myself without stopping or sleeping. That is where I devised my wicked road cocktail of slamming a 12 oz. Surge followed by a 20 oz. Mountain Dew taken in over the next 20 mins or so.

Just last week I made a 1700+ mile drive with two people in less than 24 hours. Dude, you can do this trip by yourself if you want. Don't listen to these guys, they're wussies. ;)

Just remember to be safe about it though. Pull over, walk and get the blood flowing. Any amount of fatigue comes on very quickly and will overcome you when you least expect it. Windows down, A/C blasting, music blaring, none of it will keep you awake if you're fatigued.

If you want to see boring I suggest you take the drive in between Northern California and Southern California. A nice 8 hours or so of nothingness! It's so straight and flat, that its TOO boring. :p

I like long drives. The interstates are great roads. National chain hotels and restaurants pretty much guarrantee that you will not be unplesantly surprised. The only down side to a long road trip is having to listen to the middle of nowhere radio stations. I am not a big fan of rabid right wing or Christian radio. Hopefully you can take some sort of cd or mp3 player with you.
