Only take unimportant stuff for granted. Don't take anything that might fuck you up for granted. If you take the fact that a tightrope will always hold your weight for granted you might be right 99 times out of 100, but the 100th time will still kill ya'. Yeah, there's certain things you want to check out before you dive into them. I believe that's the spirit of the phrase anyway.

Edit: Oh yeah, I've heard it used in the "appreciate the things you have more" sense as well, but not as often. That's a toughie there. I just stop every now and then and imagine how whatever it is that I happen to be doing would probably freak the shit out of someone from the 1600s. Really brings how awesome it is to live in the here and now into perspective.

I understand what you are saying. We take almost everything in our lives for granted UNTIL we feel threatened about losing it or do lose it. We get comfortable in our routines, don't venture out of them, and forget that every time we do something it could be our last time.

It takes a conscious effort to not take something in our routine for granted, unless that something is brand new or hardly used.
