is there a big difference in performance when getting generic ram compared to say crucial ram? what have you guys heard of micron ram? thanks for your help. I need to buy pc2100 ddr ram. i just dont know what kind to get and if it makes a big difference in perforance.

In my expierence crucial is TOPS, micron and crucial are both same companies. Kingston, Kingmax, mushkin all seem to be pretty good. What I've learned is that the chips on your ram is whats important, chips such as samsung, nanya, infenion seem to be the best, and the best at overclocking.

about Micron and Crucial,
Micron is the ram chip manufacturer, makes ram chips and the completed memory modules.
Original Micron modules have "MT xxxxxxxxxxx" sticker, you can find such modules in brand name computers such as Dell.
Crucial is one of their divisions that sell their memory to end-user directly,
Crucial modules are the same Micron modules with additional "CT xxxxxxxxxxxx" sticker.

Micron also sell ram chips to other memory product manufacturers, they put Micron chips on their own pcb, most computer vendors call this kind of modules "Micron xxxxxxxxxxx", you don't know how's the quality of such "Micron" modules from unknown maker.

Crucial is selling their memory so cheap now, or with coupon or promotion you can get Original Micron modules from Dell cheap, there is no reason to buy those so-called "Micron" ram, they're even more expensive than Crucial.
