How important is a 24/7 transit system?

in light of the strike in nyc, i was thinking, i know that not too many cities in this country have a 24/7 public transportation system. So how important is it? I figure for 2 bucks a ride its not such a bad deal.

But what if we got rid of service after say...1am? we can cut out a bunch of workers that way, probably save the MTA some cash, and maybe pay the union workers more.

But the flipside is, i don't know how many times the buses and trains have saved me at all hours of the morning...going home from work, going home to queens after partying all night in the city, etc...etc...etc...

I was in Stamford, CT partying one night, I tried to catch the train at around 12am, and I just missed the last train. STRANDED in buttfvck connecticut...

24 hr. system is crucial in large Cities. Toronto runs a barebones network of buses through 1:30 to 5:30 a.m. and most of them are at least half-full any given hour. Many people depend on those late-night routes.

Yeah I tend to agree with the 24/7 system in big cities since a lot of people work 3rd shifts in industrialized areas . . ..

I wish Boston, HK, and Tokyo would run their systems 24hrs a day.

Depends on the City. With a city like Sacramento, not important at all. LA, a bit more important. SF, getting there. NY, definately needed.

Boston wants a 24 hr service, but the city claims it has no money to do so.....their response..."Take a cab".

That said, after 1, no one is out.....

I hate the fact that you have to cut a perfectly good night of drinking short just to catch a train

As a New Yorker it is very important. Not only are both sides made up of morons as is the local city govt., they have to realize that not everyone can walk to work or get a cab and who knows if an ambulance cant get to a sick person because of traffic and how many people may die because of this strike. An average TWU worker makes more money than the NYC Police Dept. After 1 year a subway cleaner can make up to 47k while it take the average copy a few years to get to that point. I say NYC should fire the MTA, tell them to take their trains and tracks out of our city and only give them 2 days to do so, otherwise NYC will offer to buy the complete system for pennies on the dollar, hire NON union workers and then NYC owns it.

It is an absolute must, especially for large cities. I remember when Toronto's TTC went on strike a few years back, people literally couldnt do ******. Thank god I was in high school at the time and ended up chilling at home for almost a week.

People work night shifts, people party out late, you need transit to get these guys around

Listen, in NYC many people don't own cars, but they still need to get across the city at any given time of day. Not everyone works the 9-5. A 24/7 public transport system is necessary in order for these people to remain employed.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks that "we can cut out a bunch of workers that way" is a good idea. You want to increase unemployment?
