How I'd fix the movie industry

The movie industry has been saying for years that movie attendance is down due to illegal downloading. Whether its true or not, we'll assume the former part of the statement to be true. How I'd go about fixing the low attendance problem is take a movie and split it up into two parts, but charge half-price to watch each part. This is good because if you watch the first part and hate the movie, you'd opt not to see the second part and instead see another movie. Also, if you're too busy to sit through the whole movie, you can come back and see the second part at a later time. Lastly, it would make a great excuse to go on a second date.

If a movie is crappy and I walk out half-way through, I'm going to demand a refund, not be happy I only paid to see half.

If they want to bring up movie attendance, stop jacking up prices of movies and stop releasing garbage.

Bad idea. Release a crappy movie and nobody will see the second part.

The economics of the movie industry are pretty simple and have been proven time and time again. If you release a movie that people want to see they'll beat a path to the theaters. The movie industry moaning is centered around their inability to get people to spend $50 for 2 to see a giant pile of garbage.

I'd be willing to spend half the $ and give a "bad" movie a chance. Its better than having people not go see it because they do not want to pay full price.

That's why you're not in the movie industry. You can get people to see a crappy movie with good advertising, but you can't make them go back for part 2. If you're going to snooker them into the theater with smoke and mirrors get the full ticket price.

Yes it will, as you'll only get to see 1/2 a crappy movie and 1/2 a potentially better movie. If you get stuck with a crap movie, to see a good movie, you'll end up paying for 1.5 movies.

How about they stop making complete and total crap? Let a plot draw the people in. With the amount of money they spend on generating hype for a movie, they could've hired quite a few more decent writers to really polish it up and make it interesting. Currently, most of the $$ in moviemaking is spent on advertising, big-name actors, and special effects. A movie that is truly worth seeing doesn't need any of that.

I'd wager large numbers of people will be going to see Iron Man 2, Christian Bale's third Batman movie, the Wolverine movie, etc.

I think they'd be better served by lowering the price of tickets and concessions. Like others have said, for two people to go to a movie, its going to cost 50 or more. Two tickets, popcorn, drinks, maybe candy, the theater charges an arm and a leg for it. If you take a family of 4 out, that can easily bust the entertainment budget of that family for a month or more.

Factor in that getting a quality home theater system isn't difficult or particularly pricey, increasing numbers of people are simply opting to wait until the film is available on DVD or BD, renting it or buying it if its worth it.

Apple will come up with iMovies soon and you can download them online. That will solve everything. 😛

Though they actually should adopt a online model, where you pay say, 10 bucks to download a movie in HD. People would probably pay if it was safe and convinient (and you can redownload at no charge if it fails).

Basically you sign up for this service, then select a movie, watch a trailer if you like then choose to buy it, then it goes in your account to download it.

Guess from there it would just get redistributed but that's already happening anyway. They could give an incentive to buying a movie, or something. If they partner up with major cinimas there could be some discounts where if you buy the movie you get 1/2 off for tickets or something. Obviously if it's in movies it would not let you download right away, but it would once it comes out - youd just buy in advance so you can download it later.

Personally I think a model like that could work if done properly. The music/movie industry needs to keep up with times and realize people rather do stuff like that from their computers.

Also they should actually replay some movies in theaters. For example, I'm sure if any of the star wars were to play in theaters again, people would go watch it.

I haven't been to the movies since 2005/2006 but I think ticket prices are now $10 each.

no they arnt they live in a big city/urban area

out here in boonieville it only costs me 3.50 for a movie. when i was living in Boston it was anywhere from 10-15 depending on which one you went to

places like where i am now really screw the average in the wrong direction

my idea is to release movies to the movie theater and on demand at the same time.

Make it a 1 time viewing on demand for like $30 or something. Some people have very nice home theaters set up with a big screen and surround sound(it is becoming the norm).

I would pay a little extra to watch it in HD at home instead of the theater. Make it cost like $30 so that a group could get together to pay for it. Everyone wins.

The movie industry is going to fix itself.

3D theaters are going to be all the rage. Blaming poor sales on piracy is BS. The number of home theaters is increasing however only Samsung DLPs offer the ability to watch in 3d. Without a home theater having 3d, people will flock to 3D movie theaters.
