How I managed to find an iPad 2....

Selling internationally seems very risky to me. What protections do Ebay/Paypal offer ?

As an aside, if I was a buyer in a different couintry, I wouldn't buy one of these. Apple cannot be happy that they can't supply their American customers, in larlge part because of this grey market selling. I doubt they'll offer any warranty at all, for instance.

IF it is in a country that is eventually getting the ipad 2, then how would apple prove if it was sold on the grey market, or shipped to a friend?

Oh, you mean how would they deal with liars ?

So for $50, people have no ethics and are willing to risk commiting fraud, perjury, and most likely violate federal law on imports and exports ?

I don't get the $50 bit, but what I am saying is this.

Apple knows that currently it is only be sold in the US (correct?)
Apple knows the serial numbers of those sold, allegedly only in the US.

So you seem to be suggesting that if a person takes an iPad into a store in a greymarket country (if that makes sense) that they can check the serial and just blanket deny anyone that has an iPad with a serial sold in the US.

I don't think that they would do that, and I also don't think that they should. Yes, there are plenty of liars out there, but it also screws honest people.

I just thought I would post this little thing to help people.

When the iPad 2 was released Best Buy, they allowed you to check the stock via there website. After about two days, they removed the link to do that.

Well they really didn't remove the capability, just removed the hyperlink needed to check. Here is an easy way to get access to the page.

1. Go to any item that allows you to check to stock at your local Best Buy and copy that link.
2. Go to the Ipad 2 that you are interested in and copy link directly to it
3. Paste the link from step 1 and step 2 in a text editor
4. Replace the productid and skuid in the first link with the ones from the second.
5. Plug link into your browser and you will find the status.

I did this for all the Ipad 2 models I was interested in and just kept the links open in tabs of a window. I just refreshed them periodically.

Landed my ipad 2 on Saturday morning and they sold out about 5 minutes after I got there.

Wow, awesome tip! Will have to remember this one. 🙂

So... here is how it worked out...

iPad 2 paid $886.
Sold on Ebay for $1027
shipping was $35 paid by buyer.
paypal fees were $31.30
EBay fees were $50.50

So..

1027 - 31.30 - 50.50 - 886 = $59.2 profit

in < 1 week...

how can that be bad?

Risk of chargeback or other BS

risk 1000 to gain 60.

Not saying it's bad, just an exercise in risk/reward.

i got a good bidder... he received the item and gave me feedback instantly.... i think it also helped i was in contact with him for the past 3 days.

Both Future Shop and Best Buy in Canada have availability of the iPad 2 listed online.

However, every time I saw one listed locally (while I was at work), it'd be gone in an hour, because they wouldn't allow us to pay over the phone or reserve.

Tonite I reserved online at the local Apple Store, so I'll go pick it up tomorrow.

How much effort and/or resources did it take to actually find the iPad?
Yeah, it seems like way too much of a hassle and risk for too little a return.

And I'm glad. It's irritating to see these lineups existing so a third of those sold can go on Craigslist and eBhey. With the return being so low, perhaps these budding entrepreneurs will wise up.

I'm just happy the Canadian retail Apple Stores are allowing online reservation after the initial mad rush. I'd rather sit in the comfort of my own home sipping a tea and watching TV to check the inventory. If I don't get it, at least I'm comfortable, and didn't have to stand outside in the cold rubbing shoulders with geek entrepreneur wannabes. 😉

I don't think this method works anymore. My local best buy says availability in stores while others say unavailable but in reality they do not have any. its been the same for the last few days.

honestly?

the day the best buy stock link was posted, i used it, found what i thought was just a 16gb wifi in stock and within 30 minutes was back home with a 64gb black 3g... 30 minutes later i had it on ebay (had to register a user, plus paypal)... then watched some auctions just to make sure i was in the ballpark i needed... last day, starting about an hour before i paid attention, making sure all messages were answered... it sold, i drove and packaged it up and had it shipped out in 30 minutes...

so... i dunno, 2 hours of WORK.

Not worth the effort or risk. I thought you were going to make a few hundred at least.

you MIGHT make $100 more on ebay that way...

and how is something NOT worth $30 an hour? i wasnt doing anything else..

If you read that article that I posted, people are getting almost three times the retail price selling them overseas. In the US, people will pay a small premium instead of having to wait 3-4 weeks but it's unknown in some countries when it will be released there.

For the work, effort and risk, it wouldn't be worth $60 to me.

but it seems you actually have to know someone international to get stuff over there...
