How I connect 2 computers to the internet with dial connection?

Hi! I need to know how to connect a second computer to the internet. I have dial up internet
connection. Modem-56k. Sorry I do not know much about connections. 😱

You can do internet sharing with WinXP. Not sure about 2K, but definitely not 98/ME.

Damn! So it wouldn't work if I had a XP machine connected with a ME machine?

Sharing the connection, setting up IP's etc would work. File sharing would require some additional help.

Windows Me does include an ICS client I believe. Windows 98 does not.

If you want to share files betweem the two (and if ICS is not included on Me), put the XP install disk into the Me machine. From the other utilites or tools or something like that, run the network setup. This will install XP networking (including ICS) on the Me machine. Now the two would be able to share files properly (presuming your XP machine was not NTFS if memory servers) and ICS would work just fine.

but the real question here is why would you want to do this with a dialup connection?

and contrary to what PCHPlayer and wjsulliv said,

you can do this with just about any version of the windows.
though methods and apps would be different.

windows 98 second edition and up comes with ICS.

I sympathize, GSUtwina03. For a long time I had to deal with sharing a dial up connection. Faster connections are just not always available outside large cities.

I've had a windows 98 machine sharing a connection with 95 although it's a real bitch to get all the protocols set up properly. It can be done though. I don't think you've said but I really hope you're running xp on at least one of the machines. There's nice little tutorials that do most of the nasty stuff for you. Like wjsulliv says all you'll have to do is have it prepare a disk to put in the other comp (the one that doesn't have the phone modem) and run a setup.

As for the partitions wjsulliv, I believe filesystems across windows networks are transparent. Older versions of windows only can't see the partition if it's on a local disk.
