if I was I would be getting an employee price break. If a store wants me to use them, give me the employee discount.

If you want an employee discount, you'd have to work there for more than 5 minutes once a week. 🙂 You save the store less than a dollar by doing it yourself (unless you live in CA, where cashiers make $20 an hour for some reason)

At Home Depot stores with self-checkout the hours that were used on the front end are now going towards staffing on the sales floor..... and they usually need all the help they can get there

Just like filling you own soda at fast places.

This making customers do more work is discussed in depth in a book call the McDonaldization of Society

There's two sides to every story, and I doubt that Walmart has the purest intentions, but they do check out faster if you have a few items. The gas station analogy is a god one....technology is slowly replacing all of the people interactions we used to enjoy....you going to say when you use the ATM, your working for your Bank? or when use you use the Speed pass on toll roads your working for the toll road? Human Interaction is on its way out and its only time before we have to fight robots who kill people...a la Will Smith-esque 😉

I'd rather do it myself than have some overpaid moron do it at the grocery store.

The best part about self-checkouts is that the computers aren't unionized jackasses.

That is until the Service Workers Union decides to organize and unionize all those self-
checkout machines. Lets see they'll call it the ASWU (Automated Service Workers Union).
Then the machines will complain about not having enough money to pay for upgrades.

Where did you get this figure? And even with that amount, you can multiply it by x shoppers to figure out how much they save a day, multiply that by 365, etc...
Bottom line, the salary of the cashier is included in the product you purchase, whether it's $10.00 or .001, it's still in there, and the consumer is paying for it. Until the stores discount prices at the self checkout I won't use them.

My time is more valuable then having to worry about "working for Wal-mart for free for 3 minutes" I'll use the self checkout lines and be on my way 10 minutes sooner then you while you wait in line.

If there is any kind of line at the self checkout its faster to go to the cashier.

They have the self-checkout lines at the grocery stores near me, and unless you are picking up only a few small items, they are longer than the regular checkout. If you have any fresh produce, forget about it.

Produce is really frickin easy in my area. They either have stickers on the fruits/veggies with numbers you press or you just tap the picture and set it on the scale.

When I first clicked this thread, I was expecting the story of a mexican immigrant who was forced to work for free at Wal-Mart.

Then I realized that everything was written in English.

Oops.

Spluh. I'll trade the speed for the classy feeling of being waited on every time.

Also, I don't have to get that awkward look every time I buy a pouf sponge...or condoms

Man, I HATE self checkout lines. Every machine I've ever used has complained at least once that the item I placed on the scale was the wrong one WHEN IT FSCKING WASNT :|

Furthermore, I can only have two bags of crap, if I take stuff off, it tells me to replace it. HTF am I supposed to put more on if there's no goddamn room?!?! :|

Needless to say, if I have one or two things, I'll use the self checkout, but if I've been grocery shopping (local grocery stores have them too). No way, I'll wait in line instead.

self checkout is great. But what I dont understand is WHY do they still need to check my ID when I use a credit card when I can use it at the self check with no Id check?

ditto

except i go to the cashier even if there is 1 or 2 items

i made the mistake of buying a 150 bucks in groceries using a self checkout line that was a freaking nitemare with their stupid scales

what is the point of putting it on there to weigh something if there is supposed to be someone watching you when you are using self checkout anyway

to all those people who think their time is so precious (which i agree with), why don't you just order it online? some are even complaining that they prefer not deal with people in the process of doing groceries..

in my town, i can order my groceries by 7 am, and it's own my way home at 9 am. Or i can order by 9 and have it by around 11ish etc. etc.

edit: oh, and at stores, I always prefer going to cashiers. I don't like those machines, but the people are usually nice.

The thing that companies in my area are finding with using the self checkout kiosks is that they are quite expensive to lease, plus the maintenance an upkeep on them can be costly. Several of the stores that had them a year ago went back to good 'ol flesh and bone cashiers.

Walmart not only needs more cashiers but for checkout counters, they got like 10 at the new store they open in Westbury, NY while Target around the block has like probably 30 checkout counters.
