how hot should an athlon xp 1800 run?

Gorgonzola

yesterday i built a new system to replace my tired pentium2 system. i started playing tony hawk 3 and after about 15mins the screen went blank and i had to reboot. i got back into the game and about 15mins later the computer restarted itself.

i thought it might be a heat problem so i installed quake 3 and ran the timedemo about 10times through. it was running perfectly fine. so i suspect it was a problem with tony hawk 3.

just so i can check anyway....how hot should an athlon xp 1800 be running? it is using a heatsink/fan that was recommended to me by the shop, a Global WIN WBK68-II. the video card is using the standard heatsink and fan.

anyone else using realtively standard cooling and would like to share their temperatures? thanks

specs:
athlon xp 1800
epox 8k3A KT333
Leadtek 128mb GeForce 3 ti200

i hope it is a problem with the game and not my new hardware.

I am hitting temps of 48 running seti using a Thermaltake sk6 and asII on a gigabyte ga7dx.

Gorgonzola: check out Activision's site to see if there's any stability probs and if they have released a patch. I have only played this game for the GC or PS2, I didn't realize they had it on the PC.

Mavrick007, it was only released a few days ago. the game has a button to check for updates, but it says there are none so far.

strangely i cant get to activisions website either.

Can you post the complete specs of your system? Like OS, power supply, sound card, etc..? If its WinXP and it just exits out of the game, then its probably the game but if it restarts(reboots), then there is the possibility of a hardware problem.

I have an XP 1700 that runs around 50 C when running Folding@Home. I think temps drop to around 45-47 when I don't run folding, but I almost always have the CPU running at ~100% load.

I'm using the AMD retail HSF, and 2 case fans.

Newbs. All of you! My rig below. XP 1800 on epox 8kha+ in alujminum case.

System temp around 34C, and cpu temp around 35C. 37C on full load. I'm running the Coolermaster HHC-001 heatpipe with a fan adapter and a panalo 56.8 CFM @ 35 dBA.

4 80mm intake fans, 2 80mm and 1 92mm outtake.

1800+, very mildly overclocked to 1900+ (11.5 * 140FSB), cpu voltage +0.050

idle 37/38, load 45. I used to overclock higher (144 FSB, and +0.075 vcore)..but the highest i have ever seen on my CPU was 49C. I consider 50 already as very ciritical 🙂

Alpha pal 8045, sunon 80mm 2900rpm, 2.1w $5 case fan

RanDum72, im using WinXP, the soundcard is the onboard one on the Epox 8K3A mobo. The power supply is a 250watt unit that came in the AOpen case.

it does actually reboot, but it only happens in this game...it has never happened at any other time, so thats why im starting to think its just a bug with thps3.

i built a system for a friend while back putting all of this in a MINI Tower computer case

Abit KG7 motherboard
1800+ xp retail boxed
Alpha 8045 with sunon 43 cfm fan........used studs instead of the mounting setup Alpha's come with

Then overclocked it to 1725mhz at 1.82 volts.......temps were at 35c idle.........45c load

Kelvrick,

Did you have to remove the fan from the VIA north bridge in order to install the HHC-001? It looks to me like the heat pipes might get in the way.

Haha, yea. That little thing was a POS all right. I found that if I used a little brute strength, I could just move it a few millimeters down and the HHC-001 would be fine once I installed teh clamps.

Running a Epox 8KHA+ with a 1800+ cooled by an Alpha 8045 and Panaflo L1A and I get temps. of 33c idle and about 37c under load... I also have 4 Panflos in an Antec SX840 case. But to be honest, I just don't think its an accurate tempature reading...

As far as your problem goes, you might also consider that its your PS... 250 watts is pretty marginal....

My 1800+ @ 1.69 gig idles at 31, load at 34-35. My system temp hovers around 21. Take that...

Your boards predecessor, the 8KHA+ needed a very good 300 watt PS minimum... I would recommend a good 340 watt or more PS off of AMD's recommended PS list, although some of the newer PS's haven't been validated yet... Get a name brand such as Antec, Sparkle, PC Power and Cooling ($$$), Enermax (Some had problems with low voltage) or several others... Check the cases and cooling forum or even MB forum for some threads on the subject...

Although this thread here is for the 8KHA+, some if not most of the info in it should be relevent as the boards are so similar.
