My PC just let out a nice siren yell warning me that my PC was up to 60 degrees Cel. ( around 140-150 Far. i think) i had a few prombles before this with Diablo II crashing so i'm guessing its over heating...Esp. since it ran fine all day with out the case on....and its doing ok now with it off again...if that is a high temp for it to be running at what do ya'll recommend for cooling it off...thanks for the help!!!!

According to the technical specs for the K6-2 on page 307:

http://www.amd.com/K6/k6docs/pdf/21850.pdf

AMD recommends keeping the case temperature, Tc, below 70C. It seems to me that your temp is way (way!) too high. If I were you I'd check the voltages carefully and make sure that you are running at the specified voltage. I'd also check the processor fan and make sure that it's turning. Lastly, I'd check the heatsink connection to the CPU chip and make sure that there's barely any thermal grease there (too much is worse than none at all) and that the two surfaces are parallel to each other.

Good luck - [to everyone else] please, no comments from the peanut gallery on the improbability of an Intel employee helping on a AMD CPU issue. ;)

I have mine at 582 and it works fine at 40-44C at max I think
or 46C and is stable.
Make sure to remove that thermal pad completely off of it
scrape it with a screwdriver.
and apply thermal compound found at radio shack that sell for
1.99 some of them do not have you going to have to serarch around
If that not the problem,
seem to me your case is too hot...
Use Rain to help cool down the cpu when not in use.
Use 2nd case fan, if it in the front
have it suck air in.
If it in the rear, have it blow out air.

thanks for the input i'll try some thermal compound tommorrow...its 1:00am...as for my case i added 2 new fans to it the other day one in front pulling air in and one in back pushing it out...unfortuantly most of that gets blocked by my Voodoo 5 5500 card so i might need a bigger fan/heatsink for my PC...any recomandations??? thanks again guys

The shop I frequent has them run really hot for some reason. Need a decent heatsink for some of them to work properly in a cramped case.

My K6-2 350 cruises along at 60 degrees, all the time. It never changes.

My hardware heat monitoring no longer works... so I couldn't tell you how high my 450 runs at. Needless to say it worked before I tried OCing to 600 Mhz... K6-II's just don't go that high hehe ;)

I put in a k6-2 550 in my brothers computer the other day, and during the installation of windows, the alarm went off. I panicked and burnt my finger on the processor like an idiot. I switched his 550 out w/ my oc 450, and it ran fine. His proc ran fine in my system. Switched em back, and noticed that his processor hs fan sometimes wasn't turning. Turns out there was a loose connection in the 'y' connector. Always pays to check the fan, make SURE it's turning consistently.

Yeah, usually the hardware monitoring will scream like that when the temperature gets too high, and it's mostly due to a defective or incorrectly installed heatsink/fan.

Another thing to double check is the CPU core voltage. Read it right off the front plate of the chip. Newer K6-2 / 550's run at 2.3v.

my k6-2 400@448 runs at 35C. that is with an alpha though :) hehe. heatsink costs more than my chip but OH WELL

well I've personally had a heating problem too. when the CPU reaches 59 Celcius, it begins to stop working properly and programs shut down. I've had this happen to me, and have experimented with different cooling solutions. First off, your house temperature should be kept at around 20 to 24 degrees Celcius. anything higher, and the case temperature will stay nice and high, no matter what cooling you have.

Your case temperature is the biggest thing that affects the CPU. I personally have 2 intake fans. but the case runs at 35 to 37 degres Celsius. obviously, that heat isn't doing good, so I'm going to put in an exhaust fan in the top, and I bet you I'll see a temperature drop of 2-5 degrees Celsius, which will in turn affect the CPU greatly, (My heatsink/fan combo is about as good as you can get on a Super 7 chip).

When the case temperature hovers around 30 degrees Celsius, I get about 49 Degrees on the CPU, so if I can lower that to say 28 or lower, then I'll be able to run the CPU at the low to mid 40's. alot better then 37-39 case/53-59 CPU.

My k62 450 goes between 100degrees F in idle and 135 degrees F during cpu intensive apps

Sometimes PC Probe tells me that it is 538 degrees :) I have no idea why. After a few seconds it goes back to the constant 60 it's always at.

well i put some thermal compound it today and so far so good...its still running rahter hot around 54degress Cel. but it hasnt crashed or done any funky stuff...if it starts up again i was thinking about maybe ordering the golden orb from coolerguys.com...is it a good heatsink/fan or is there a better one out there (but not to expensive i'm allready over budget with all the upgrades i've done)...i wouldn't mind trying to o/c it if i can get the temp down at the regular speed first... and yea i cheked the voltage ealier when i was haveing all sorts of stablility promblems its amazing what a difference one-tenth of a volt makes...:) thanks for the help guys!!
