How Hot is too Hot

I finally got my opteron's working thanks to the help of this board, they've been running for a few days and are something of a space heater for my room. They are running much hotter than I expected.

The BIOS is reporting each proc at around 35 degrees C, the case temp is 45 degrees C. I was surprised by the last temp, but I believe it as my whole case is boiling hot. They are in a cube case like: My Case but without all the mod stuff. There are 2 case fans on the right side where the hard drives are, and 1 case fan on the left side where the proc and mobo are. I have no idea what is generating all this heat. Here are the specs of the whole computer. I guess what I'm asking is if there is any way to cool this down to a more reasonable temp or if I should be concerend. This isn't my first dual system, but it is my first opteron system. Compared to my 3200+, these are running much much hotter.

How many fans blow in vs. blow out, also is the PS fan blowing outward?

It has frozen on me twice since I've had it. I have the fan on the motherboard side sucking hot air out of the case and the 2 hard drive fans blowing into the case on the other side. I opened the side of the case where the processors were and the temps have stabalized to:

CPU0: 29C
CPU1: 31C
System: 45C

It seems like a lot of the heat is coming from my 6800, it is much hotter than either of the processors, are they supposed to be that hot?

True - hopefully something didn't cook in the process of that happening though.

I don't think that case is best for all cooking gear. I would probably have used something more like this

Aspire Aluminum tower and had 4 fans in it.

the HDD's throw a lot of heat too, actually way more than one might think.

What are you doing w/ such a beast of a computer anyway?

That case isn't big enough, I have an extended ATX motherboard for my opterons the motherboard won't fit in that. I tried an Antec file server case first, it said EATX support, but only if you took all the hard drive bays out.

I use the computer for simulating networks. I do a lot of VMWare stuff where I have 8 or so systems running at the same time to test stuff out. I also do some 3d design stuff, but that is more of a hobby than for college or work.

The case is actually not that small, more like a small fridge, just not too cold like one. The processors themselves don't seem to hot, it seems like the video card is throwing out a lot of heat. Its a AGP 8x card in a AGP Pro slot, it isn't supposed to make a difference, but is it possible its getting too much power and thats the source of the heat? When I had it in my 3200, I don't remember it getting this hot.

I think you have a cooling problem like I had. Bad case design, I have a $300 Lian-Li, the biggest I could find, but I had to revamp their cooling solution, and it still sucks ! I can get it OK cool, but it loud, so now my $300 case runs with the side cover off, and its quieter. I think your system temp sensor is wrong. What motherboard so you have ?

I have an IWILL DK8X. I'm not too worried about the motherboard and processor temperatures as much as the 6800. With the side of the case open, the 6800 is still smokin, but the rest of the case is cool. The hard drive side is still closed and it is cool now as well. Does anybody mind giving me a temp readout of their 6800GT, I'm going to try to find a temperature probe tonight and see what mine is running at and compare.

When I touch the heatsinks of the processor myself, they feel about as warm as my 3200, so I think they are ok.

I think I'll pick up some more case fans too, time for the dremmel.

What HSF's did you get ? My Thermaltake Silent Boost K8's work great, and are very quiet. The lian-Li is a great case EXCEPT for the cooling solution. My radeon X800pro is very hot, and I have a 120 MM fam in the middle of the case blowing over it to remove the heat, which only works well with the side cover off. That may be my heat source problem also.

I'm just using the stock heatsinks from AMD. They seem to be working fine for the opterons, I think my problem is from the 6800. The 6800 I have exhausts its heat back into the case rather than out the back. I think I'm gonna go over to frozencpu and pick up a VGA silencer and throw that on there so it pushes the heat out the back of the case.
