How hot is too hot?

i have a thermal probe attached to the back side of my VGA card right in the center of the gpu.
i get 49c idle and as hot as 59c under load.
If i am not mistaken that would convert to an actual gpu die temp of 60 c 70 c or even hotter.
i would mediately shutdown if my Barton got that hot. do GPU's run hotter and at 70c am i killing my new card.
this is at stock speeds by the way

my 6800gt has seen 80-85 degrees c dont worry bout it.....threshold for 6800gt in the control panel is like 120degrees c

gpus run much hotter than cpu's, they have more transistors, and in 3d games are doin alot of leg work for u. those temps are normal
tho if u do wanna have reduce temps .... well id say invest in a 3rd party cooler....like the vga silencer.

Flash your 9800P 256/256 into an XT and you will get ACCURATE readings from it's built-in thermal diode.

80 C is not unheard of for a 9800P. . . . . with an Arctic-Cooling Silencer (rev3) you will cool your GPU at least 10 C (and your case by exhausting GPU hot air out).

Is the P -> XT for 256's only? Even though I dont really want to flash my P to an XT, I really would love the Temperature Sensor feature on my 128 9800P.

I don't think there are any 128MB Pros with temp sensors. Mine doesn't have one and it's a 360 core. I have it flashed to an XT and testing max freq settings with artifact dictating my limit, not temps.

You don't have to flash it, since you'll void your warranty. Just get ATI Tool and increase core and memory speeds. Your probe should give you accurate readings.

A flash for a 256/256MB Radeon 9800 pro gives ~10% more performance gain you CANNOT get from o'/c'ing.

The 128MB version of the 9800pro (generally) does NOT have a thermal probe . . . only the 256MB Pro is IDENTICAL to the 'XT' except for it's BIOS (and usually an inferior HS/Fan).
