Probably a good idea to get an aftermarket cooler like Cooler Master Hyper TX for cheap and make sure the heatsink/thermal paste are seated properly.

Use Intel Thermal Analysis Tool to check the temps.

download a program called CoreTemp.

If thats the program your using and its reading 83C, that is definitely too hot.

You dont want to exceed 70C for long periods of time.

well i used core temp before but what i read 50 and 80 on was the Intel TAT tool i have a 4300 on the stock fan at 1.356 volts with as5.

it doenst go above 70 for long periods, but tat has this option to put workload at 100 percent for both cores, so i do taht and after 5 mins its at 82 degrees.

Under TAT, that's a bit too hot, even for the stock cooler. I would re-seat the cooler, perhaps using AS5, and/or buy a new cooler for it.

holy crap 83c, that is really hot. you should strongly seek better cooling asap and at least lower the oc on that chip for sure, otherwise it will be dying a very early death if it is running near those temps for a bit of time.

yeah... that seems way to hot...
here's what I normally get on my air cooled rigs (and a couple watercooled ones)
I've been running seti@home on all cores for the last 2 weeks straight with no breaks

CPU................IDLE.......100% LOAD
(2)X5310.........30C........60C all 8 cores
E4300.............28C.........43C
E6600.............33C.........42C
E6550.............28C.........35C
P4 2.6.............33C.........47C northwood cpu watercooled
Opteron175.....33C.........43C watercooled and overclocked to @2.6Ghz (air cooled it was 57C... that's why I went to watercooled on this one)

I also leave my window open to the outside so I can keep the computer room cooled... my ambient temp in my computer room is about 23C... when I first built my E6550 machine, my temperatures were about 10C higher. I added a 120mm FDB fan to the front of the case to circulate air better and my temps dropped to what they are now.

ps... all my c2d have the stock fan on them

If it was my machine I'd firstly see what temps I am running in stock configuration then if I am still seeing hotter than normal temps then proceed to focus my attention on why. Maybe the stock cooler itself is not properly seated or just junk.
