How hot is too hot??? - 8800GTX

I recently picked up an EVGA 8800gtx and I swear I could cook an egg on it. Idle is around 60-65c and when playing games, it kicks up to around 80c. If I toss another case fan or two on/near it, the temps drop ~5c.

The fan on the video card is hardly spinning at all (compared to an average case fan).

Are these temps normal for this card?

Is my fan defective?

Any ideas and or suggestions?

Those temps are nothing for the 8800. You will only need to worry if you get up over 100C When you hit 130c then you will have a problem.
 
I have a GTS just for comparison. It's about 90 degrees here today and I have no A/C. Idles at 54-56C and at load it gets to about 65-70C. You have 33% more transistors firing and some higher clocks, so I would think your temps are about normal for a GTX. Just make sure you have the best case ventilation you could provide. That helps a lot.
 
My 8800GTX idles around 67C and goes up to 75C under load. Your temps are considered normal for the card.

Temps are normal. If you're using WinXP you can download RivaTuner and speedup the fan. Currently it's turning at 60%. I wouldn't worry about it with its lifetime warranty and all. I can't do anything about it, I'm runnig Vista 64bit.
 
Start running two 8800GTXs in SLI and see how hot the top card gets.:sun:

I've got a side fan exhausting the hot air over my GFX cards out of the case and it cooks up the entire corner where my PC sits.

I idle in the high 70s and hit 81c under load even with my fans set at 100% in Riva.
 
My GTX idles at 85 C and runs about 100 C at load, stock clock speed and cooler. I guess I got one of the crappy ones...
 
I mention this in every one of these threads, but keep in mind that the card dumps a lot of hot air into the case - sticking a PCI slot blower below it helps things pretty significantly.

Alot of people set manually fan to run at higher RPM with software like ATItool etc. Not sure if the fan control works yet with 8800 and Vista, should work under XP if I have understanded correctly.

Trust me, fan control in RivaTuner 2.01 works with both 8 series cards and under Vista.
 
nVidia's default fan speeds are a hilarious bad joke.

60% idle, meaning your card cooks while idling, & then kicks into 100% during load.

100% is not silent at all, so i wouldn't really want that all the time, but since i can only set one fan speed w/ Rivatuner (no fan speeds per temp setting 🙁), it kinda has to be left @ 100%, since @ ~80% (where it's basically inaudible), it's still a bit too cozy for my liking.

Mine was like that until I got one of those Thermalright HR03 plus coolers for it. Now I idle at 36C and load I hit around 50-55C.


I have a 92CFM 120mm fan instead of the reccomended 92mm fan on mine though.
 
About the HR-03...sure your GPU runs cooler but all that heat gets dumped into the case doesn't it? And I suppose you have to have pretty good case ventilation to use it. Unless Thermalright somehow circumvented thermodynamics :-O , the card would be putting out the same amount of heat right?

There are these awesome things you can install in your case called fans. They are so incredible, you can even have them blow air either into the case or blow hot air out of the back. You should check into it sometime.

I tend to agree with him, though. I don't like video card coolers that don't exhaust air towards the back at this point - and that's why I've held off on upgrading the cooling on my 8800.

It seems there's some limit, though, as the card is so damned long that it requires some force to get air all the way through.

Did you not read the part where I said case ventilation?

My point was that unless you have very good case ventilation it may not be all that great.

On a side note..why is the quoting and emoticons sorta messed up in this forum now?
