How hot is safe?

whats the safest maximum temperature for these cards?

I've had the x1950xt at 84-86 C mid-game in crysis.

is that safe?

also how hot can you let a 8800gt get? is 90 deg celcius overkill?

If you are that hot, you have problems in my opinion. Maybe not today, or not tomorrow, but I think you are hurting the cards. You need to get RivaTurner 2.0.6 and increase the fan speed on the 8800GT. You also need a better case/more fans in your case.

90C is about 200 degree F. That is like a toaster or an oven.

thanks segan, how hot does your 8800gt run under load?

When I boost the fan, never over the mid-70s, and I think even that is hotter than I like. I got the Accelero S1 cooler coming in the mail.

I don't know about 8800gt, but 84-86 midgame is crysis is not bad on the 1950xt. the auto settings for teh 1950xt fan don't go above 70% until you hit 100c (at which point it goes to 100%). I think that tells us the dangerous point on that card.

My BFG 8800GTOC was ~108C under load during the ATITool artifact test. I thought I had decent cooling in my P182 case, but I guess these G92's do have inadequate stock coolers. Either that or I am simply unlucky this time. Regardless, I just ordered the VF1000 and some Thermaltake copper bga heatsinks thanks to swtethan and the excellent review from SPCR.

Maybe I am wrong about it being "dangerous" but I think it is "uncomfortable" to run in the 80s and 90s C.

john has some crazy temps on his card. john, I really think that you would be better off rma-ing that card than altering it. 108c is silly, esp with that fan speed cranked up. You've gone straight to ludicrous speed...

@ John: did you adjust fan settings using RivaTuner? It's a well known issue that the 8800GTs have faulty auto control fan speeds and keeps the 8800GT at 29% fan speed constantly, even under load.

I run around 56C idle and 82C load on Crysis.

maybe you have to crank the fan to 100, have you heard that there is a permanent bios limitation to a fan speed of 29 % on all oem 8800gt boards?

Even with 45% fan speed in RT 2.06 it reached 108C after 15 min of the artifact test; idle was around 61C. 😛 Therefore with the fan speed any higher than 45% I could hear the 60mm fan over my case fans, and that simply is not acceptable (to my ears). Since I enjoy quiet computing the VF1000 is going to be ideal for my ears. Not to mention it should really knock the temps down and hopefully carry over to a future gpu upgrade.

If you have the same Sapphire X1950xt 256 MB card that I have then your temperatures are the same as mine. I bought a Chakra case with the 250mm fan, and added two 120mm fans to help with airflow. It does to an extent, but it still hits up in the 80's after gaming for a while. Plus it the default heating solution sounds like a dust devil. For as much as we pay for these cards now a days, you think we wouldn't have to spend another 40 bucks on a decent cooling solution. It seems on my Sapphire that as soon as it hits 89c it kicks in full blast, and cools itself down. I got a friends EVGA 8800 GTS 320 MB, and ran it in my system, and it stayed around 70c.

Or the lowest temperature that I would enjoy while being inside sauna.

(yes you don't have to thank me for this info)

Yeah, it's not that hot - certainly not hot enough to oven cook or toast bread.

If you're running stock clock speed and didn't mod the voltage, then those temps should be just fine. You can bet that the companies stress tested their designs before mass producing them.

YEAH voltage has been increased to the vgpu core and i've also got the core & mem overclocked. i need every extra fps i can get for crysis

I have an antec 900 with the default 3 120mm fans and top 200mm fan. All fans are set to medium to help control my e6750 at 3.5, so case airflow is very good. I also get to the high 80's when the gpu is pushed during an extended gaming/benchmarking session. The default x1950xt fan gets really loud when it hits 89c, I believe that bumps the fan to 50%. Use ati tool and it will tell you what the default fan settings are, iirc it goes up again every 3c until you hit 100c, at which time a small jet engine appears to take off in your case as the gpu cooler goes from 69% to 100% 😉

lol, no joke it really is pathetic how loud this thing gets when it hits 89c. I'll have my headphones on playing BF2, and it will get that hot. I thought a good case with good airflow would help, I was wrong. I can't complain about the performance though, it's excellent.

well, thats good to know because even 5 hours of crysis my x1950xt never goes above 86, that means i can up the voltage and overclock it a little more. right now im running it at
681/1834 at 1.500 volts.

edit: also my fan speed i keep at 100percent the noise doesnt bother me, cuz i game loud.
