How hot is hot? My vid card is running at 90deg celcius

Granted its hot as hell right now...

I just modded my 9800 pro 256mb, to 9800 xt
and Overdrive is reporting it running at around 88-90 degrees, celcius

whats the average temperate, or rather safe temperature for a video card to run at?

too hot . . . its too hot, its too hot, too hot . . . too hot, bab . . .

😱

😀

is it even stable (no articfacting?)

what's your case temp? . . . good airflow?

. . . anyway, my ati 9800Pro 256/256 (from NewEgg) ran at max 80 C (70 C at idle) . . .

after adding the Arctic-cooling VGA silencer REV 3 (currently in Hot Deals for $11 + Shipping) it now runs 60 C at idle and 70 C max

worth it!

BTW I do have the Arctic-cooler VGA Silencer installed.

CPU 55
MB 45
Video card 90

These seem to be the avg. temperatures it hangs around at.

BTW should I have removed the shim that is around the chip?

I left the shim on there, and put the paste and installed the card onto it.
Also I did not over tighten the screws, it did it enough so that I can see that the VGA silencer didn't move when I tried to move it.

the new Radeon 9800 PRO 256MB versions
are XT versions with a PRO bios on it... flashing it wiht an XT bios gives you all the XT functions,
including the Overdrive, and enabling the temperature diode 😱

The 256/256 Pro IS the XT with a different BIOS (and cooler). Same probe. 😉

EstoyLoco, try r&r'ing your Cooler again.

FIRST of ALL, what were temps b4 you changed it with the stock fan?

What shim? No, don't remove ANYthing not in the instructions.

Too much thermal paste is BAD.

It must fit down tightly (short of cracking the card).

There are TWO ways to put the blue holder on - one way makes bad contact.

The VGA fan IS spinning?

Apop,

Unfortunately, I did not test it with the stock fan, I just installed the VGA Silencer before I flashed it to XT.
I am getting artifacts, I just tested it using ATI Tool, and 5 seconds was the max it went without error 😱

The shim surrounded the chip, not the core itself, but the Silencer still made contact with it (the core), so I just left the shim.

One thing to note though, the blue holder is loose. The metal holder + screws are not though, is yours like this?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Currently I have 1 rear case fan that is attached to my water cooling radiator, and 2 PSU fans (TruPower550).

I think I'm going to install some front fans right now.

Also I used the supplied paste, I think i'm going to remove the card, and re-install the silencer with Artic Silver I have around.

Well I guess I installed the VGA Silencer wrong.
One of the screws last time was as tight as it could go, and the other screw went further, I didn't really think anything about it.

so anyways I took it off, removed the supplied paste, reapplied Artic Silver.
and this time, both screws went in evenly and perfectly.

So I guess it wasn't making the proper contact on the core.
I'm just sooooo thankful that the core did not crash and burn.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overdrive now reports 68C, and its actually runn at Overdrive Level: 418 MHz.
I will start testing ATI Tool for artifacts now.

The mobo temp even seems a little to high, which comes to the conclusion your case temps are a little above normal. No AC in the house? That would be the factor.

Yep no AC in house.
I also only have 1 case fan+2 fans in PSU, I like my computer quiet 🙂

I've let it sit for awhile...
here are the normal use results:

CPU 54
Case 41
Videocard 77

😎

they don't say in the instructions, but if the blue slider is positioned wrong, the HS does not contact the core properly (i did it too then reversed it b4 i put the card in).

90C was pretty hot . . .i'd say you were close to a meltdown. 😉

HOLY COW! Your mobo is incredibly hot. Try applying some Arctic Silver Ceramique compound between Video card and the cooler, and try putting your PC ina better location, adding more exhaust fans to create negative airflow, or turning on your AC 🙂

Thx alot for your help Apop
it was your suggestion to reinstall it that ultimately narrowed down the problem...

Is 41 deg. C for case temperature really that high?
I thought it was still well within safe standards...
If it is too high, I might have to add a front case fan then ;/

My 6800GT runs 80-85c tops with far cry. And thats in a coolermaster case with 3 out take fans and 2 intake fans with the AC running. This is ofcourse with a core overclock of 50 Mhz, but the cooling solution on a Nvidia is much better than a 9800. At least it doesnt leave the RAM chips out to fry.

How exactly can i monitor gpu temperature? I know its a noob question, but i can't find it on my asus probe or in aida...?

Well, it's a tad on the high side, if I cover up the blowhole on the top of my case with my keyboard, my case ambient can get up to 40C. I suggest trying to keep it below that, and a case intake fan is often a good idea. Mine runs from 34-37C case ambient now.
