How Hot Does Your Thunderbird Get?

Is 56C too hot for a 1GHz Thunderbird with FOP38? this is what I got after a crash in 3DMark2000 with a FOP-38 and that cooling glue that came with it.

Also, what are some overclocking setting you guys recommend for a TB 1 Ghz with PC100 SDRAM?

thanks

Ever since I bent down the thermister and applied thermal resistive tape on the back of the CPU I've been running 25 degrees C at 1.35GHz with 2.5 volts.

Because the thermsitor readings are both inaccurate and incomparable to other systems. See sig for more info.

Also, A7v's wtih updated BIOS tend to read temps a bit warmer than actual core temp sometimes. This is actually better than the case of updated KT7 Bios' reading lower temps than actual most of the time.

well...now this is not good, I started having instability because of heat, and I am not even overclocking. I do have a full case, but isn't the 1ghz suppose to be stable with a FOP-38?

Your HSF should be able to handle the heat produced by your chip, so that probably isn't the problem.

The two things that I can think of are:
1) thermal transfer compound: are you using it?
2) bad airflow inside the case: if the air around the HSF isn't cool enough, the HSF won't be able to do its job.

BTW, are you using any voltage mods or anything?

I took the cover off, and I am using thermal compound, yesterday, after a crash, I touched the hs and it was burning hot. I don't know what this could be, but I am still experiencing freezes!

If its burning how, then you are probably getting heat transfer to the heat sink (I would hope!). Is your fan running? The 38cfm should be loud as hell and do a decent job cooling the FOP38 unless the air in the case is also hot as hell. In that case, get better cooling for the case.

For that to be true, you're either running NOT at 2.5v, or some insane cooling, or are incredibly lucky that you've not killed your CPU.

Not to mention the thermisters are inaccurate....

lol, if i understand AdamK47 - 3DS's comment right, it is a very sarcastic way to explain that tempratue readings can be inacurate🙂

oh ya, btw, im not sure how it happens, but i have heard of people puting the heatsink on in such a way that it does not make good contact with the core, so you might want to check that out.

Adam,

No, I didn't catch it at all. Prolly because I've seen way too many people say stuff like their CPU is running at 20C (colder than room temp? wow!)

Im running a 1ghz retail tbird@ 1313mhz on that new msi board. I connected the bridges with the defogger kit. Im using the stock heastink with arctic silver and the fan from this kit http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/1/113.htm?229

Im running at 1.8 volts setting and the temp reading says 39-40C after I have had the comptuer on all day and rebooted. I have touched the heatsink while the case has been open and I cant feel any warmth at all. I could actually run the same settings at lower voltage also but just left it at 1.8 just in case. I have the multiplier of course at 12.5 and did the fsb overclocking just for fun. at 110 it wouldn't post tried 105 and that is where I have been at. Im not too sure about overclocking all my stuff but I may just leave the fsb alone and run it at 1250mhz since I don't want to break anything.

Im hoping heat isn't an issue with my setup? I want to get rid of this damn jet engine fan on here no matter what its just too damn loud.

damac,

Your temps are very, very, very off. Expect a cpu temp of around 35-37C
OVER ambient case temp. Usually, this means a cpu temp of around 55 to 65C. Unfortuantely, with the nature of socket A temp readings(see link in sig for more details), there is no way to correct this flaw.

Mike

Once again you attemp to attack me on my stance on Socket A temps. If you don't want to believe me, and want to believe all the "Big Irresponsible" websites, then fine, believe them.

This is one of those blatantly wrong readings. This is one reason why you get people asking "MY Cpu is running at 50C, is it too hot". Its because they see 1.3GHZ cpu's running at 40C. They don't know it isn't core temp, therefore assume their chip is running too hot.

Mike

Dude calm down Im not on the atack, I just think it is funny that all you think about are temps and how every review is wrong, and from what I have learned from you and your friends It sounds like you are right....Ment no harm by my post, again I just think it is funny. You are a man on a mission and there is nothing wrong with that you are spreading the word and thats a good thing.......... BTW my via HM says my temps are 16c system temp and 22cpu temp dont know if those are right its 60f in my room at this time.....

Gunslinger's temps are remotely possible, with a 18C casse ambient.

Renob,

Very well then😉. According to your MB, you're running 7C over ambient. You should be in the neighborhood of 20-24C over ambient(roughly 36-40C core temp). Ah, the effects of good case cooling on the thermistor readings...

Mike

Mike so your saying that if my system temps are let say 20c then my cpu temp under load are around 40c to 44c ???? It reads 10 to 15c over system temp under load so thats low?????

exactly, that's the typical KT7 reading, even with a compensated BIOS. And Case airflow, specifically airflow aimed at the cpu SOCKET area, since it effects the thermistor air temps behidn the cpu, help to reduce "cpu temp readings".
