I'm replacing my 2.4ghz with a 3.06, but I'm not sure if the stock cooling on the 2.4 will be good enough for the 3.06ghz. Anyone know? I'm not sure how hot the 3.06ghz chips get...

According to Intel, the typical thermal output of the 2.8/533 and the 3.06/533 are 68.4W and 81.8W, respectively. Intel S-Spec list

edit: oops, you said 2.4, not 2.8... the 2.4/400 and 2.4/533 are both at 59.8W.

Do you know if the stock 2.4 cooler would work, then, or would I have to upgrade?

I have no idea, never seen/used either one. But it seems like it would be worth getting the retail-boxed 3.06 and using the stock heatsink that comes with it. It's guaranteed to do the job, right? :)

Intel started using a new HSF with the 3.06, and I'm sure the 3.00 has it also. I would be cautious to think the 2.4's cooler would be enough for the 3.06. However, the worst that would happen is that the temps would be slightly higher than you would like but still safe. I couldn't imagine the processor would fail in that case. If it were me, I would try it and monitor the temps, and replace it if I were not happy with the outcome. Anandtech's review on the 3.06 has Pics of the HSF's that have been used on recent CPU's. Peace.

Intel went to the avc sunflower cooler on the 3.06 for a good reason- it puts out more heat than any other x86 processor ever invented. You'll probably save money going with the retail package, rather than purchasing a suitable aftermarket cooler and oem cpu...

Really a matter of whether or not the stock cooler's noise level is acceptable for you, if it is, stick with it, it's a great reliable cooler designed to run that CPU just fine. If it's too loud, consider an aftermarket cooler :)
