How hot do your HD's run??

There is a 120mm Fan blowing on all three of my HDs and they are spaced 1 slot apart from each other so its not like they are touching....

My raptor is the coolest at 37C , Maxline 3 300gig is 43C and my seagate ide is 40C.

My case ambient is 25 and my processor idle runs at 33 and 43 under load.


Is this normal temps for HD's???

However, since they used to also run in the 40's, I finally had to fabricate my own open style alum. brackets to hold them and get useful cooling.
I found that a stack of 2 HDD about 3/4" apart bolted underneath from a 1/4" protruding edge utilizing the front 2 scewholes and a SVC 80MM fan blowing crosswise from side across both platters area really did the job.

Sadly, any HDD mounted in normal case slots will not get true cooling since it is actually enclosed even if a fan is blowing on it, and if fan is direct mounted, HDD wands will also pick up fan vibrations. Anything in the 40's is unacceptable to me.

I have access to a complete machine shop, so this is an option not avail to most.
I no longer worry about HDD death.
I believe heat is the greatest enemy to longevity.

 
My Seagate and WD, 30 C.
My two Maxtor drives, 36 and 40 C.

This is why I won't buy Maxtor drives anymore.
 
Use Everest to read of the highest SMART reading. My old MAxtor d540 doesn't give temp values in SMART.
Other drives are in the 40s. Samsung giving coolest temp but feel warmest to the touch so maybe the design for heat dissipation is better.
 
A well-vented case should maintain the HDD's temp from +5 to +10C above room temperature. A drive will multiple disc platters will run hotter. The top of the drive should feel warm to the touch. Use an IR thermometer to double check the temp since the reported software temp can be wrong.
 
Your drives are too close together or you don't have nearly the airflow that's necessary to maintain acceptable temperatures. Correct this soon as a hot drive is not a happy one!
 
30C, in a three-stack with two 7,200rpm drives and one 10,000rpm SCSI drive. Before the SCSI drive, they were spaced apart and were running at about 23C.
 
My Samsung 200g ATA usually runs at 20C but it's pretty cool tonight and right now Speedfan reports 18C. I have an 80mm fan at 8 volts in front of my case about 2" from the drive.
 
These temp readings being reported are completely meaningless, since almost nobody is reporting ambient temps.

Start with your room temp....when you start your computer, your hard drives cannot be any cooler than that reading (without refridgeration techniques).

If you get a smart reading lower than your room when you first start up, the sensor is off. Try to adjust your readings (temp offset) to reflect this. Say your room is 22C.....by the time the computer boots, the drive has increased maybe 2-3C, so the reading should be around 25C. MBM and Speedfan can adjust their reported temps to make up for the difference.

I always check my drives at various places to see how the smart temp matches a reading from a different temp reader (I use a non-contact infra-red temp reader). Hard drive temps are sometimes puzzling to figure out, but are important.

Me....I like to see readings in the middle 30s, when my ambient is about 28C.
 
I really dont understand why my temps are so high. There is a 120mm fan right in front of the 3 drives and they ahve about an inch spaceing between each.

You guys with the 20C temps are running only one drive??

Yup 1, but in that one inch maybe you can put in 3 vantec hd coolers 🙂 should drop them a lot more.
