How hooked to gaming will I be if I upgrade?

Kind of stupid post isn't it?

Anyhow, gaming on a 500 Celery with GF2 MX PCI card is hard on the soul. RtCW was OK, still playable. MOHAA is playable up until D day then i turns into a PowerPoint presentation.

MOHAA multiplayer works so so but I get owned in close combat because of the lag and slow-a$$ rig. I still manage to pull an all-nigther and I am afraid it will turn into an all-week gaming habit.

So is it a good idea to upgrade?
:D

Haha, I have a gig of RAM, a 9700 pro with a P4 2.4, and I've yet to play a game on it! :)

<-- Not a gamer.........yet.

Then why did you waste your money on a 9700?

As long as you can "buy" software.... games will happen. Just stay away from Postal2, lame lame lame.

Reeeaaaaaally now. I do hardcore graphics, flash, web development and video editing. For a living.
EDIT: Just because a guy chooses to actually do something constructive with his system instead of wasting time playing games that will get him no further in life, does not mean that he's WASTING the power of his system.

Yeah, I would suggest a 1700+ and nice mobo to go with it. If you are looking to upgrade on the cheap I would pick up a GF3 (any flavor) for around $60 too. :)

Shouldn't that be: Chicks dig guys with other things to spend money on.

Pros of an upgrade:
My other games will be played again at the fps they were ment to be played at.

Video editing uses CPU time. Web development, I can do on a P2 300. Flash, same. Hardcore graphics - if you're talking about static stuff and not 3D rendering, then you just need display area, fast hard drives (maybe), lots of RAM. All of that can be done on a Matrox G400 - which is actually excellent at these tasks.

not much. I upgraded my computer pretty fully - 2.75ghz, 120gb WD, Plextor 40x, 21" monitor, and GF3, and all I play is Counterstrike, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, and Diablo 2 - things my old computer easily handled

No need to flame The Presence for having a kick-ass rig.

Flame me for being a retarded old school rig owner instead.

It depends on your personality. I upgraded my video card so I could play UT2k3 at a higher resolution (the native resolution for my LCD...) and I ended up not playing it much. I got a great deal though, so it's not like I spent much on the upgrade.

I understand that. I don't do much 3D, though I do some now and then. However, it still does not constitute a "waste". I may not use every single bit of power that my system has, but it sure ain't a waste.

You don't need to upgrade to a NEW PC.. you could probably get away with a faster CPU and video card upgrade for a while
might cost only a few hundred bucks at the most too.

OR you can upgrade to a DDR rig and just buy a cheap CPU like an XP1700 and a Radeon 8500LE or something
you'd be VERY happy with that over what you already have.

I forgot to mention it's a Compaq.
I would need new:

Case + PS + floppy
MB + CPU
Memory
Video

A CD-RW and a 60Gb HD can be scavenged from the old rig.
Hmm, Linux on the Celery would be fun to play with.
