How high?

How high does the price of one gallon of regular gas have to climb before you SERIOUSLY start making changes to your lifestyle such as driving less, using more public transportation, selling an inefficient car to buy a more efficient one, etc.?

I put about 10 gallons in my car per week, or about $26. That's about $1350 per year. As gas prices seem to surge for no reason but for greed, I am asking myself this question.

My job neccessitates that I drive a lot ( in Atlanta  ). I don't really pay attention to gas prices because almost all of my mileage is a business expense.

I try and drive less, thinking about buying a car which will get way better mpg than my truck, but it will take a while to offset the cost of the car with savings in gas money..

I just paid $3.15 today for Sunoco 93. Sure, my car only needs 91 octane, but the price difference was $3.11 vs. $3.15 so I sprung for the good stuff (which used to be 94/95 octane IIRC so its not-so-good.)

My car only gets 16-21 mpg too, which kinda sucks. But the car is paid for, and I have no payments, so I'm gonna keep it at least until I can land a good job.

I've already cut back on how much extra driving I do, and I have a more efficent car than I did 6 months ago.
I can't do the public transportation thing, It would take me hours to get to work and I don't think it is still running when I get off.

I'm already driving less. I only drive to work and back during the week, and have cut out all unnecessary trips on the weekend.

Same with me, I'm in the car 8-10 hours a day driving from job to job, there is no way around it.

I fill-up twice a week, 22-25 gallons at a time. A tank lasts about 400 miles @17ish MPG.

Thats a full-sized V8 pick-up, the gas savings for driving a small truck really arent that dramatic.

Buying gas is just a business expense, nothing else.

I've already started to drive less as well.

As far as gas prices teaching SUV owners a lesson, I remember friends and people around me saying they would quit smoking when cigarettes reached an astronomical $2.00 a pack. What are they now, $4 up to $7 a pack in some places? The idiots keep on smoking, and I can't name anyone who cut down on their smoking just because it costs more. Whatever the price is, people will pay it.
