Optimal usually isn't the highest it can, it can be a couple of settings below this on occasion.

Check what the max refresh rate is for your monitor at that resolution and then alter it to something below that.

i.e: if you monitor supports 110hz maximum at 1024x768 and then supports 100hz, 85hz 75hz etc.

Optimal probably has it running at 85hz, which is fine but if you want to jack it up, why not go for 100hz, that way it's even crisper without overstraining things.

nb: w2k shouldn't allow you to overstrain your monitor....usuaully

I agree, my 21 inch and 19 inch are both at 1024x768 16 bit 85hz. 75 would also do the trick.

I run mine at the highest refresh rate for the resolution I'm using.

Uncheck the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" I run the highest it will let me. I might be decreasing the lifetime of my monitor, but monitors are cheap, eyes are not.

85hz is a standard rate, 100hz is flicker free and is perfectly fine for your eyes, anything higher does not really have a big impact.

It's when you have a little 14" monitor running at 60hz that you have trouble....

For playing games you want smooth framerates like you're watching a movie so, for Quake1, you want to set it at 70 hertz; for Quake2 and Unreal set it for 75 hertz.

If you unlock Vsync in the games, than it won't matter what the monitor is set to.
I would still put the monitor at least at 75hz.

Leave it on "optimal"; at that setting it sets the refresh to the highest supported by your monitor at a given resolution (assuming of course you've installed the correct drivers for your monitor).

I have mine at 85hz at 1152x864, very flicker free it is, so 90 would be good too.

Optimal does not neccessarily mean the maximum, i have found on several systems that it often means 1 or 2 down from that
