I was overclocking with a MSI kt4v and the 1700+ would go up to 13x but the 14x and 15x option would boot up as something low like 800Mhz CPU and was not detected as an athlon XP. This was with both 266 and 333 FSB. Should this chip be able to take a higher multiplier?
it's likely a problem with your board and not the chip. the 1700+ has a default multi of 11x. with most via boards, you'll be forced to use either multis below 12.5 or multis above 12.5, depending on the default multi of the chip. in your case, it's 11x. so nothing above 12.5 is going to work unless you do a workaround to pick a specific multi. theres other workarounds that would enable you to choose multis higher than 12.5 only.
i did the socket mod and forced my via kt333 board to a 13.5x multi with my 1700+. 14 and 15 worked, but was unstable.
an nforce2 board would work much better. but the socket mod is also pretty easy so you might wanna try it. and it doesnt permanently change the chip or board, so its completely, and easily reversable.
Ok thanks for the info. I am actually getting an MSI K7d MPX board now, so if I were to do any overclocking it would probably have to be multiplier only as the FSB of that board as well as my RAM won't do much better than 133Mhz.
Believe there is also a socket mod that is not permanent, but I still think you are betting off maxing out your bus speed first, which generally keeps the multiplier setting down......
