How high is to high for Vcore?

OK, right now im overclocking my 3500+Venice and ive gotten up to 2.7GHz without rounding errors in SuperPI, but my Vcore is at 1.65.....

Im only pushing around 37C on idle and 42-44C during loads, so how much higher can i go on the Vcore before i should stop?

bacially, would 1.7 or 1.8 Vcore be ridiculous?

should i be worried of frying my CPU at some point?

My comp runs 1.77v, but it runs rediculously hot. But if yours isn't hot, go between 1.7 and 1.8, shouldnt be too bad.

ill try 1.7 first, see if that helps with stability some more

I've got a terribly old CPU, an AMD Duron running at 1.2 ghz. If it won't fry my piece of junk, I don't think it should fry yours.

1.65 is pretty high for a Venice... how long do you plan on keeping it? if it is only for a couple years... it won't matter... but if you plan to keep it for a good 10 years... good luck...

Ha, ill probably be getting an X2 in at least a year, so 2 years at most ill have this

it's fine.. ur temps seem pretty good.. dont worry about it.. i've seen people running over 1.7v on air for brief amount of time w/out any problem..
mine is at 1.63v... 30c idle and 41c load..

I'd estimate that by running at 1.7v (from the original 1.4 rating) you are slicing about 40-45% of your cpu's life. I'm not sure how long CPUs are spec-ed to work for but I'd say at least 10 years, which would mean that your cpu could conceivably survive 5.5-6 years. This is assuming you can keep heat undercontrol, however, I only used your voltage.

well i know i wont have this CPU for more then 2 years, so im fine

I think my final overclock is looking like 2.7GHz with Vcore of 1.700


If Windows wont boot up at 2.8GHz or higher, is that because the CPU cant go that high, or the Vcore is to low?
(Sisoft rates my CPU as having a maximum frequency of 3.0GHz, so im a little confused)

One thing I'd recommend that you do is to use Rightmark CPU to lower the voltage down whenever your cpu is idle or at a low load.

well, im about to run Prime95 tonight, a good 8 hour test. Hopefully it holds and ill be able to ensure im at a stable clock

when i run Prime, do i want to do a test of everything, or a specific one?

You want to test the ram as well, since the mem controller is on die. I wouldnt assume that the system is fully stable just because it can prime for a while. Just use prime as a reference and then use your PC as you normally would. If anything weird happens (random restarts, etc) then back off the overclock and try your luck.

Yea, im just using Prime as a reference to make sure its stable somewhat, and then when i get going playing BF2 and all these other games, the real test will start:beer:

Well i didnt run Prime95 (me and it arent getting along)

but i did run the Burn-In Wizard on Sisoft Sandra for 8 and 1/2 hours straight, having it just benchmark the CPU and RAM. (ran a total of 90 benchmarks for test, 2 tests of CPU and 2 tests of RAM per cycle, so all in all 360 tests were ran) and it didnt freeze up at all, and the highest temps i got were 47.5C on 1.7 Vcore


all in all, i think im runnning pretty stable now

over at xtremesystems..where they really push the envelope on OCing..

there was a recommendation the 1.65v on air is probably the max safe..there were some who felt if your temps are ok(but whose on this unless you use a better measuring device than BIOS and winxp)..you may get away with 1.7v..with a good hsf(ie XP90/XP120)

Bottom line is nobody really knows

I have a 3200 Venice that I think is stable @2.8 with 1.65v bios, 1.62v in winxp...but I am not sure if my temps are really accurate or voltage readings...so I am at 1.57v in winxp/1.59v in bios at 2750..prime95 and memtest 86 stable

I really want 2.8 but I am not sure the extra voltage wont starting cause problems like with Northwoods where OC starting dying over time

I most certainly wouldn't go higher than that.

There is a nice little app out there called S&M. The CPU FPU test really stresses the CPU and has produced for me the highest heat compared to other tests. Might want to add it to your test line up.

I dont like taking mine above 1.55v. Which is the main reason I haven't hit 2.7GHZ stable.

My comp will boot Windows @ 2700mhz (300*9) 1.55v, play BF2 and run 3dMark 05, but Prime errors out in about 20 minutes.

well ive tested everything, ran everything (except Prime, i hate it, dont like it, honestly i dont need it to tell me my CPU cant round ) and until my system hangs or i get error screens or random reboots, its stable enough for me
