how high can i overclock celeron 500 w/ my old ABIT BH6

I just happen to try to o/c my celeron 500 PPGA with a generic slotket on my ABIT BH6 1.0(SS bios). i have it equipped with a golden orb and it will only run at 75fsb at default voltage.. which is 2.0V. i tried to boost it to 83fsb but then it will crash before win2k loads up. wondering if anyone of you out there tried to o/c this combination.. and willing to offer some suggestion.

This brings back memories of my second overclock attempt over a year ago. You've basically got it as good as it gets with your 500. All I could do was 75fsb even with a big GW fan. The 83mz fsb is very hard on your peripherals and that's where the wife's suggestion of me getting a computer to play with and leave the family one alone came from due to file corruptions on the hard drive because of out of spec pci.

Your best bet would be to sell that 500 and get a 566 Celeron 2 and run that at 100mz fsb which is almost a sure thing. That 500 is probably worth as much as the 566 as its no longer produced and common in office computers.

Its fairly important to keep the pci/agp specs fairly close to maintain stability then work on cooling. Price out a 533/566 or 600 C2 that will do 100mz and then sell your 500, shouldn't cost more than about 20 bucks difference if your slotkit is fc-pga compatible and has the 66/100/133 jumper.

Having the same problem with my 766 celly....75 is fine....83 no end of problems...corrupting both my hard drives...ghosting a 3rd harddrive...etc....guess I'm stuck at 75 unless I can figure out a way to get 100 fsb to boot and get the pci bus closer to spec

You'll never get a Cel 766 to run at 100MHz FSB unfortunatley,that would be 1150 MHz!:Q

If you do buy a Celeron 533 make sure its the 533A version which is the FCPGA variety.Alot of these hit 850 MHz 🙂.

Kanuk:

I tried the celeron 733 on my BH6. he's rite, it will never hit up to 100FSB regardless of what cooling you have. the best i got is up to 83FSB with the golden orb.
just FYI

The 100 FSB was tongue-in-cheek.....would be a minor miracle to have a 766 run with at 1150 (tho it would be sweet). No trouble to get the 766 to boot and run at 83 but it really toasts my D drive. I think I've tracked my problems at 83 FSB to my Promise Ultra 66 card (it doesn't seem to have much tolerance for out of spec bus speed). Since I have run both of my harddrives without problems at 83 in another setup, I guess the next decision is to run the harddrives off of the motherboard, run the cd rom off the controller board and hope the cdrom is a little more tolerant......the game continues 🙂

You could always buy a flip chip P-3/100 fsb chip and install it in your slotket. I've been running a P3-750 oc'ed to 930/124 fsb in my daughter's BH6(rev. 1.0 w/SS bios) for almost a year now. I'm waiting for a P3-1gig/100 fsb cartridge to come in right now for the next upgrade on this fine old board. The price on P-3 750's is pretty cheap right now, too.
