trying to eat healthy and aside from carbs from the rice and mercury from the fish, it really doesn't seem bad at all.
i mean, japanese people i read are healthy and have lower rates of cancer, and they are generally skinnier than most, so sushi is not bad right?

Sushi is good for you but the rice does add a lot of carbs, in addition to it being quite expensive if you are eating a lot of it.

Depends what you're eating

nigiri, not so bad
lots of baked stuff, pretty bad
unagi is pretty unhealthy, but so delicious

If you eat too much tuna and other large fish you will get a lot of mercury and heavy metals in your system. That isn't great.

Everything in moderation is the BEST rule.

Are you serious? How many fat asian people do you see at all? It's rice and fish. No heavy fats, grease or oils, no added flavoring or preservatives, just basic sustenence.

But they aren't thinner just because of what they eat (though it is a major factor), it's also due to how much they eat (or rather, how much they don't eat).

Moderation...... The only word anyone needs to know in order to diet successfully.

generally chinese and japanese people do not eat food prepared the same way as they do for us gluttonous Americans, nor do they eat anywhere near the same quantity.

You will be very surprised how many calories your downing with a simple spicy tuna roll. Add some tempura, and chicken teriyaki, some noodles, and you will be eating 2000+ calories in single meal. Its like going to any restaurant, french, italian, chinese, if you dont watch what your eating, you can take in alot of bad calories.

That being said, I enjoy sushi at an amazing restaurant nearby 1-2 times a week. I do watch what I eat because I know how easy it is to eat poorly and give in to just make my taste buds feel better, and me feel worse 20 minutes later. If you want to stay healthy, try not to get, or limit anything with tempura (fried batter), unagi (broiled eel), any roll that is "spicy" or has "crunch" in it. I love spicy anything rolls, but they are generally packed with extra sugar/oil to get that flavor. I am a huge unagi fan (its my favorite thing), but even I need to limit myself as its very fattening (the skin is).

If you want to eat something healthy, I usually get seared tuna salad with avocado as a starter, and dont put any ginger sauce on it. Get some edame, some green tea too. Also, any type of sashimi is generally very good (pieces of fish without rice) even salmon which has healthy fats. Some are more fatty than others, but any fish is very healthy, except maybe toro which is very fatty or eel. Order simple rolls without alot of craziness to them, or eat just a few pieces of specialty house rolls. Again, just keep in mind what you are eating. Everything in a japanese restaurant will taste good, and you will want more of it, so keep things in moderation because its easy to splurge.

fish is high in essential omega-3 and omega-6 fats. Yes it's good for you the only downside is the price. Did you know that most sushi restaurants even pasturize their fish?

Portion control is the American show-stopper. We don't eat anything in moderation. You can eat anything, and I mean absolutely anything, that you want, and maintain your weight if you control portions. If you want to lose weight, you control portions and cut out the junk.

There's no silver bullet, but weight loss isn't all that hard if you control portions. I've been managing to lose a few lbs a week by cooking, as eating out = mystery contents, controlling portions, and that's it. I haven't cut back my alcohol intake (usually a beer or 3 with dinner, and a few extra on the weekends) and I still cook with tasty stuff, olive oil in just about everything, red not-so-lean meats like skirt steak and ribeye, etc. You can diet by making it about how much you eat and not miss out on much (ice cream excluded, unfortunately).

That said, my fiancee and I go to a sushi buffet every Saturday at lunch time, its the only place around here we've found that doesnt kill quality or proportion (lots of rice, paper thin fish). I limit myself to the nigiri, raw only (no eel unfortunately) and one piece of spicy tuna roll every time we go. Hasn't affected me adversely yet. No beer or sake with that, though, I might be Italian, but I'm not drinking THAT early in the day :)

I LOVE eel donburri, but I think it's one of those meals that take up most of your daily allotted calorie count.

Fat Asians don't really exist in Asia. But when you come to the US you see a bunch. The thing is not everyone drives around everywhere and you walk/bus/public transportation when you can in Asia. Trust me. Everytime I go back to Taiwan for 2 weeks, I feel it in my legs after a few days. All that walking around puts walking 25 min to class on campus to shame.

I think the other thing is that in Asia, when you eat, you get small portions. In Taiwan, we love eating like $2 dishes. If you just get like 3 dishes and some rice, yeah you could come out spending like $8 for 2 ppl for a decent meal, but you have to admit portions aren't that big. A lot of people just eat that and say they're fine. However, if I go back with the US mentality that $8 dishes should feed 4 ppl, then yes I order like 10 portions of stuff in Taiwan, and even me and my mom can spend $12 - $15 at one of the street vendors. Is it filling? Yeah, but I don't see anyone around me eating that much.

Finally, sushi in the US is terrible for you. Baked CA roll with salmon on top and a fatty thousand-island based sauce? Hah, heart attack. Shrimp tempura roll with unagi and avocado on top? Yeah.. fattening too. That's why you don't see these things in Japan.

yeh, they hook us up for lunch there. The price is cheap and the food is very fresh. Thats why we keep going back :) Normally each piece is $2-$3 ala carte, or the same price for half the fish as an appetizer.
