How have the social forums on Anandtech changed your views?

How has all the discussion on the social forums affected your views? What are some things that you have learnt? Are there opinions/notions that you had before, that have changed (even in a subtle manner)?

I used to think people were intelligent, rational, and good. Now I know none of that is true.

You all are crazy stupid jerks.

It's amazing what lows people will stoop to trying to defend their horrible decision making.

I would have to agree with lxskllr, Sluggo and Dirigible ... my "view" of things has been negatively impacted. Sure, you can post almost any crap on a social forum because of the courage that Internet anonymity provides but even if 10% of what is spewed there is true it is scary.

If users are using the Discussion Forum to try to convince others that their view is the "right" one ... it's not working. I immediately get turned off to the ideas of those like Craig234. The guy needs to turn off his PC and walk away ...

Hasn't changed anything. I generally dislike people and the forum confirms my suspicions about the human animal.

They confirm my suspicion that most men these days own vaginas and will turn to a gun as the first, second, and third means of defense, justified or not.

I learnt that some people say "learnt" instead of learned. :colbert:

That'll learn me.

Just when I thought my opinion of people couldnt get any worse along came the internet and eventually forums. It all went downhill from there.

On a more technical level, I've learned a lot factoids regarding day to day living, and pop science. ATOT is like an idea box. I'll see something interesting, and look into it further. Little I couldn't live the rest of my life without, but interesting none the less.

I don't really know. I think I've had my greatest self-discovery on forums outside of this one, although this place is one of the most fun.

It's served as a great reminder of how radically different people's world views can be in different parts of the country and the world. I also feel like I understand better where they come from, though I don't think I agree with them any more than before.

Not a whole lot. I think it's just reinforced how people behave differently online versus in person. In other words, its a nice point of reference on anonymous behavior, but that's mostly it. I suppose social forums haven't changed my views much.

Now, if we're talking about pure social interaction and the ability to exchange information on various areas of expertise or enthusiasm, I'd say a whole lot. But I'm still not sure if the 10+ years I've been on social forums have done more for me than the years before that on IRC. Still, I travel better and get further on my hobbies than I did before social forums, but as far as my views go I don't think places like this have changed mine much at all.

True for me too.

However, I used to think my life was pretty good. After being here so long Ive come to realize my cock is too small, my house isnt nice, my vehicle sucks, and I dont lift enough.

I wouldn't say it affected at all. It has increased my knowledge in different areas though. I also stay out of P&N.

Anandtech helped me through some tough times.

I was born and raised down in Alabama on a farm way back up in the woods. I was so ragged that folks used to call me Patches. Papa used to tease me about it cause deep down inside he was hurt cause he'd done all he could.

My papa was a great old man, I can see him with a shovel in his hands. See education he never had. He did wonders when the times got bad, the little money from the crops he raised barely paid the bills we made. For life had kicked him down to the ground. When he tried to get up, life would kick him back down.

One day Papa called me to his dying bed, put his hands on my shoulders and in his tears he said: "Patches, I'm depending on you, son, to pull the family through. My son, it's all left up to you."

Two days later Papa passed away, and I became a man that day. So I told Mama I was gonna quit school, but she said that was Daddy's strictest rule.

So every morning before I went to school, I fed the chickens and I chopped wood too. Sometimes I felt that I couldn't go on, I wanted to leave, just run away from home. But I would remember what my daddy said with tears in his eyes on his dying bed. He said, "Patches, I'm depending on you, son. I tried to do my best, It's up to you to do the rest."

Then one day a strong rain came and washed all the crops away. And at the age of 13 I thought I was carrying the weight of the whole world on my shoulders.

And you know, Mama knew what I was going through, 'cause every day I had to work the fields. Cause that's the only way we got our meals. You see, I was the oldest of the family and everybody else depended on me. Every night I heard my Mama pray, Lord, give him the strength to face another day.

So years have passed and all the kids are grown, the angels took Mama to a brand new home. Lord knows, people, I shedded tears.
But my daddy's voice kept me through the years. "Patches, I'm depending on you, son to pull the family through, My son, it's all left up to you."

Changed my views? Yes.

Exposure to alternative views on various subjects can be enlightening. For example... if you only listened to Fox News you might actually think WMDs were found in Iraq. Now that statement does need a qualifier in it, but I digress - it's important to temper your mind in fire. Social outlets are such fire.

While you're at it, they can all be considered their own form of entertainment. Fun and learning rarely fit together so well. :p
