How has the economy affected you?

What has changed for you since the economy has tanked? Anyone resorted to ramen noodle dinners yet? If you're saving money doing someting what is it?

Me personally I've been lucky so far. I looked in the newspaper and where there use to be pages of jobs there is nothing.

Was out of a job at the beginning of this year (graduated college in December 08), but ended up getting hired in March despite the horrible economic conditions.

I am no longer able to get a credit card with a 0% intrest rate for 1 year *grumble*

So far we've been pretty lucky. We bought a house and paid off a lot of our debt (stupid student loans) with the housing credit

We are being a bit more careful with our spending habits but we needed to stop going out to eat as much anyway

Had to give up high salaried job coz they have cutting down, now at a more stable lesser paying job for which I am probably overqualified.

was very very difficult to find a teaching job as a first year even with a math degree and a masters in education

Since I still live at home I can survive not having a job since the end of April. I can't decide what to even apply for, nothing sounds interesting.

I saved enough money to live for several months. Only bills are car payment and insurance. I could ditch the car payment if really necessary as I have a paid off car as well.

I had to cancel my WoW subscription. Drive less. I need to cut down on frequency of Costco visits though, I buy too much stuff every time I go.

Less growth means less jobs, promotions, bonus, and raises within an organization as well. So include me in the under paid and over worked category.

5.5% Profit Sharing removed
30% cut in my annual bonus with next year likely zero
No pay raises
More than 5 forced PTO days
Career path set-back

Low interest rates = less interest income

When I said I've been pretty lucky I meant compared to most. I still had my hours reduced( I still get too much overtime), 5 paid holidays taken away, and my bonuses taken away, no pay cut as of yet, insurance rates went up. I still consider myself lucky though. I still have a decent paying job. I've cut back on going out to eat, driving, buying less computer parts. My main focus has been paying off debt and stashing some cash back for a rainy day.

No more contract jobs. Extra income gone due to that. Loss of 21 days of a pay a year from my full time job. But my employer claims things are looking up!

My company only buys us lunch every other week now, and we only got 2% raise this year 🙁 But we still get all our parties, massages on Fridays, and bonuses. Yes I love my job.

Anyway, out of work for 5 months now. Eating lots of Ramen noodles, doing side jobs and looking for work.

Upside was that my old employer owed me $10k at the time they laid me off in back pay. Had to get it to me in 3 days according to state law. Had been fighting it for months before that.

pluses: we might be closing on a house soon because housing prices are more affordable now.

minuses: they cut some employee benefits
