Still fun? Thinking about replaying it. Dunno if nostalgia is making it seem like it was awesome or if it's actually awesome.

If you werent just talking about NWN1 then I really thought Mask of the Betrayer expansion is one of the finest RPG I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

From what I've heard NWN doesn't hold up too well in terms of graphics due to its primitive 3D models. Old 2D hand-drawn games (like P:T and BG) still look great on the other hand.

I never cared for the gameplay, did not like the shift to 3D, and now that its a little older, the 3D looks like crud by comparison.
Still play BG2.

If graphics are important to you, get the super duper edition of NWN 2. Several of the patches improved graphics quality and performance at the same time.

Visually, its definitely dated now. There's still a wealth of modules and content available for it, a good deal which is considerably better than 'modern' RPGs in terms of story and characters. But they will look pretty bad. The official campaigns were more about showcasing what the engine could do than about delivering a good story.

NWN2 improved the visuals considerably, but the game was so buggy, it was unplayable until the 3rd or 4th patch. I don't think it had the same level of community developer support that NWN1 has either, but it had a much better SP campaign. I didn't care for Mask of the Betrayer, too much micromanagement with the soul eater thing.

I played NWN a few months back and it still has many very active servers running various "persistent worlds". It seems to be holding up great in that respect. If you are talking about the single player campaign, I don't think that was ever NWN's strong suit, you are probably better off buying and playing a newer RPG.

The base game of NWN has always paled in comparison to the experience available in the online community, which unfortunately but understandably has been seriously dwindling over the course of the last few years. There's still some really good servers available however, chief among them being Higher Grounds imo. Really good team-based PvE server with a very faithful interpretation of a huge amount of classic DnD lore. Unfortunately for PvP the only server that ever mattered, Bastions of War, has basically succumbed to old age.

The CEP and other community mods have done a lot for it graphically though, it's no Crysis but a lot of the monster models especially are quite well textured and by no means an eyesore.

What it really comes down to is how you want to play it. Roleplaying or single player you'd probably enjoy NWN2 more, but for action or sort of an MMO experience (or probably PVP, I'm sure it's out there) then I'd say NWN1.

Oh the memories. I want the customizability of nwn with the enjoyability of bg. I think if Bioware would have kept up the support as if it were an mmo with frequent tile-set expansions, texture updates, class updates, ruleset updates, it could still be popular. It was in fact, suppose to be the end-all be-all make your own world rpg. Which, it actually was, but it just wasn't kept around. The out of nowhere Obsidian announced NW2 which make nwn take the back seat. NWN2 was superior, but the toolset was a complete mess which probably turned many many people away entire from the nwn series.

I enjoyed the nwn campaign. Nothing special about it, but it was long and let me get my hack-n-slash on. I actually liked the first expansion the most. The atmosphere was great.
