Classic Athlon slot A at 1Ghz. My parents are giving me one of their office computers towards the end of summer. I would like to turn this into my personal machine. It has a 500 or 600mhz chip in it right now. It has an asus mother board that supports 1ghz. I am just hoping that there are some left since they have almost disappeared off the pages of pricewatch. I dont really want to overclock anything since i dont want the noisy fans. Anyways, suggestions are appreciated as to where i should look and what a good price for one is.

Thanks

I don't know how good this store is, but they at least have them. They have the

Athlon K7 950Mhz® Thunderbird Slot A for $170 and

the Athlon K7 1Ghz® Thunderbird Slot A for $310.

More than likely a slot a TBird will not perform well in that motherboard. Why don't you buy yourself a 750 slot A classic athlon, a good HS/F like an Alpha P7125 and a GFD and overclock it. You should be able to get real close to 1ghz with that setup....just go over to the For Sale/Trade forum and ask who has one that will clock up to 1ghz.

What all is required for a gfd? Like, what does it do, how hard is it to use. If so, i may just keep what it has and buy one of those things and a nice heatsink.

I would rather not overclock since i dont want to mess with a lot of fans, making memory timings is right, etc. Plus, i am going to soundproof the inside, which will build up heat. Im in central texas, so air conditioning will already be high.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Just stopped by that econo pc. Something fishy with the warranty prices. Plus i found it odd that a 900 classic is $150, which is half the price, less than the 1ghz.

If I were you I'd just buy a new MB that has socket A and a KT133a chipset and get a thunderbird cpu. Then you'd have a path for future upgrades too.
