How hard would it be for an American to live in Canada?

Is it easy to live long term in Canada as an American, or quite difficult?

AFAIK, Canada has gotten real strict with their immigration policies so I would imagine that it would be quite difficult.

Depends on where. I've been in Toronto a few times and it's like any other big city in America. Start getting closer to the Frenchies and who knows?

I'm an American living in Canada. Although realistically I have no plans to return to the US, so might as well just call me a Canadian. There was a lot of paperwork to fill out, some hefty fees to pay, and it took about 6 months for me. But I was married and my wife was pregnant, so they rushed it along. Work visas have taken up to 3 years lately I've heard.

depends on what you mean. Getting a work visa can be a pain because companies are required to 'prove' that there is nobody else in Canada qualified to perform your job before you are accepted for work.

Other than crossing the legal hurdles (work permit), life in Canada is pretty similar to the US, except you pay more for cell phones, tv, cars, etc.

I spent a year living in Montreal and loved it, though I'm a dual citizen so I had no work permit issues.

It'd be VERY tough. The speak a foreign language, they use money with "funny sounding names" and pictures of people you've probably never heard of...But, if you don't mind being a "Yank" or a "Hoser," you'll probably do ok, eh?

I believe they are hard up for trained medical personnel in remote regions. With the proper credentials, that would be a snap.
