I've heard that Win2k will setup a dual-boot for you automatically if you install two OS's (you don't have to go out and buy special software to do so). Is this true?

How would I set it up? I mean, it can't be as easy as just popping in the Win98se CD and installing it. I'm not that lucky. :)

Hints? Advice? Walkthrough?

Thanks guys

you can not install win 98 after win 2000. Win 98 will remove other OS during installation. You have to install win 98 first. and then install win 2k as you would normaly install and don't change your har ddrive file format as FAT 32. This will work just fine.

Ya, it's really easy IF you have Win98 installed first. You just got caught with it in the reverse so it'll be harder.

win98 first then 2k.

I was told of a work around that works if you have you 2k installed on fat32 and not ntfs.

boot the 2k machine using a floppy and install 98, you have to force it to do a blind install, unfortunatley I don't remember the the switch for blind. Then put in your 2k cd and boot from the cd. then do a repair install from the cd.

Never tried this, just heard about it. i would recommend backing up before you try.

you don't need to format it again. but you need to reinstall win2k after you install win 98. but i will strongly guggest you reformat and do a clean install.

No you dont have to format, just as long as you have different partitions. Just use a boot disk install win 98 and choose d: (or whatever partition you want it in). after install boot from win 2000 disk and choose repair option.

Did excat same thing. Currently have win200 on c: and win 98 se on d:

good luck

not complicated at all.

well, I think I'll just have to wipe it clean and start over. That'll give me a chance to do some things I wanted to in the beginning.

NO! WAIT!

If C: is FAT32, just boot your Win98 CD. Instead of just typing 'setup' to get things started, type 'setup /ntldr'. This is *supposed* presere the NT loader.

I have used this method and it works.

inqztive, you don't know much do you, and you're recommending (from the great depth of your knowledge obviously) that someone wipe their system and start again?
learn your way around the registry, read around on MBRs, dig around for knowledge... there are ways to do things. and most of all...
leave the advice to people who really know their way around OSes, kiddies. this stuff takes way more knowledge than having seen a bar graph and pretending you're god on recommending computer hardware.

Travisbickle were you born a jerk or did obtaining you vast knowledge of operating systems make you that way?

One way that I've heard to do this that may be a bit easier, is to use the "setup /ntldr" command.

Never done it myself, so use at your own risk.

edit; sorry suo, I didn't see your post.
