It's running 3 in a row that's killer. I can run a 6:30 mile, but if you tell me to do another it'll be around 7+ mins.

3 miles in 18 minutes means he's gotta be pretty athletic to do it. If he's not a consistent runner, I'm sure he won't be able to do it.

Exactly! But that requires really good endurance if you can keep up a fast mile.

I'm agreeing with this all the way. I run a 10.8 hundred meters and a 58 quarter mile and didn't break into the 17's yet. It takes very serious running almost every day. Having more then one day off a week was heaven to me. Every run after my freshmen year in training for XC was more then 45 minutes up to 2 hours non-stop with no miles going over 8 minutes per.

I seriously doubt you could run 3 miles in 18 minutes after only a month of training. It's alot harder than you think. I know track stars who ran the two mile in 9:30 who couldn't break 18:00. It takes more training than you think.
If they can run 930, then theyll break 18 for the 3 mile. Unless youre talking about a 5K (3.125 mile) XC course, which is a little different (depends on the course), but still very doable.

And I'm also in the group who disagrees with guapo's claim... wanna bet 20 bucks that you cant do it?

I ran cross country for 2 years. My best time on the 5k (about 3.1miles) was about 20minutes. The fast guys on my team could do the 5k in about 17 minutes on a fairly level course. I say you have a good chance of getting that $20. I am 6ft tall and weigh about 145lb. THe fastest runners were always skinny at my school.

3 miles in 18 min is pretty dang hard. Your friend must have a lot of endurance. I won't be surprise if you lose your $20 though.

FYI. I've ran a mile in 5:20 before, but at that pace I'm shot for the next 2. I really don't have a runners body to pace myself. The best 3K I've done is 19:35.

My fastest time in the army was 11:59 for 2 miles. I think that if you have someone to run with, it is much easier. I could never break 13, until I decided to run with the fast guys. 3 miles in 18 minutes would be hard!

That I will agree with. When you're running with other people you do tend to push yourself harder. I guess it's the innate desire to beat someone else and boost your pride. I was never a runner till I joined, but I did always run faster when I was running w/other people.
