I am not a runner, but have a friend who claims he can do this... I was thinking to my self, he is not that athletic, and i dont remember him running much while at school (Rutgers). so i bet him 20 bucks that he wont be able to do it.

the bet is that he will not be able to run 3 miles in 18 minutes or less.

how hard is this to do? what are some of your times?

edit:
I have just received word he has been running for a "couple years"... but also that he did not run track in hs or has ever run competitivly

he is 5'8", 140lbs fairly built upper body.

give us a physical description of the guy. i can barely run a mile in 6:30 so there's no way i could do it but then im an unathletic slob. it should be pretty doable for a fairly athletic individual.

Six minute mile? Not that hard.

Three six minute miles in a row? Pretty darn hard.

Can I do it? Hell no.

I can do a 9-minute mile, though.

mathematically, it's 1 mile every 6 minutes...add to that the fact that each successive mile is harder than the last, so it really comes down to stamina I suppose since 1 mile/6 minutes is very doable. How good is his staying power?

6 minute miles aren't that hard, but 3 in a row is. If he's a runner he can do it, but if he doesn't run regularly he probably won't be able to.

If you're in shape to a good degree, 6 minute miles aren't too bad. If you don't run regularly or even work out, then its going to be pretty hard.

I can walk a mile in 18minutes x 3.

But jog 3miles in 18minutes (10mph) nada.

When I was being healthy I could do 17miles in an hour on my Mountain bike (road riding), and that was rather tough.

I can do a mile in about 6 mins, when I'm in "shape" and it's pretty hard to keep that pace up... you'll just slow down over time. Now if he's a marathon runner or cross country runner or something, he can probably do it.

unless he's a regular runner, i think you'll win this bet...hehe...

in my prime when i pushed myself, cross country mile time was 5:15...but today my 3 mile run would take about 30 minutes when taking it easy (treadmill in a gym)...

For the average person, it's extremely hard. For a runner it's hard but doable.

A friend who used to be in the core did a best of 3 miles in a little under 20 minutes.

Is he a runner? If he's a runner and trains regularly it should be no problem for him. Otherwise, 3 miles at a 6 minute pace is pretty tough to do if not impossible for the average couch potato.

In high school, I ran a 17:09 5K (3.125 miles). I didn't break the 18 minute barrier until my junior year, after two hard years of non stop conditioning. I think this guy is bluffing.

The guy may have the body of Charles Atlas, but appearance and strength have ZERO (0) to do with ENDURANCE. I work with a guy that's about 50 years old. He's about 5'5" and 120 pounds, maybe.

He runs about 10 miles at lunch everyday. My car would give up and break down before he did and he's a scrawny little toothpick.

Cross country is 3.1 miles. When I was on the team in high school, my best was a 17:11, and I was/am a hard core runner. Most people on the Cross Country team averaged around 18:30-19:00. So unless he is a hard-core runner, and has run distance races for awhile, he's going to have a hard time winning this bet.

actually, I think he's gonna lose for the same reason. You have to remember, in terms of running, your upper body muscles suddenly hurt you. They are denser than fat, you can't leverage them to run longer/faster unless you run on your hands(which I'd love to see), so end result, he's prolly got a good amount of deadweight that his feet have to drag along.

I doubt it. I wouldn't take the bet though, if this couch potato gets hurt or worse yet has a heart attack, you might get sued.

Well, if he's been running consistently for a couple of years...I would say he's probably in pretty good shape. And he probably has a pretty good idea of what kind of pace he is capable of. Sounds like he's setting you up to lose $20 ;)
