How hard is it to replace a laptop screen?

For a Compaq? I don't know the model yet but is it something that's easy to do. How expensive?

If you're semi-competent in hardware installation, it is relatively easy.

The main problem is getting a fully compatible and functional screen.

It's pretty easy but also pretty expensive. EBay is the only place to get a decent price if your manufacturer doesn't offer a decent price.

EBay is the best place to find replacement parts. Most OEMs will not sell parts to users. Often the part costs exceeds the depreciated value of the target laptop. In that case, one of the best solutions is to find a used, like model on EBay and between the two - cannibalize to one.

Just for reference, the screen for my IBM A21m is $700 from IBM. I can get the same laptop from ebay for less.

The LCD screen is typically the single most expensive part of a laptop. Unless you can find a replacement super cheap, replacing the entire laptop is usually a better option.

Unless you can find one on Ebay, get ready to shell out megabucks. I had my Dell apart because the case has a stress crack and I wanted to reinforce it with epoxy before it got too bad. Wasn't that bad, but a manual to tell where all the screws were hidden as well as the plastic flanges that snapped together, would have made the job easier. But I have to tell ya, getting into the inside of your laptop is nothing like your regular pc.
