I may need to pick up flash programming for work. I have a degree in CS and know C++.

For those of you who have done this under similar circumstances: If I grab a decent book on Flash, what is a good guess on how long it will take me to become proficient?

a day.

it's not hard, just use the tool that macromedia has and it's pretty much drag and drop. I learned it from the tutorials that were included in the program and from playing around.

it depends, if you wanna just do "normal stuff" like a little bit of animation here and there then its pretty easy like people said. but if you wanna do the fancier stuff like pseudo 3d and other special effects, there is a lot of scripting involved and may take a bit longer to learn.

Actionscripting is pretty straight forward. If you've got a good grasp of C++ then AS won't be as hard, pretty much like any other scripting/language the basics are the same. Additionally, Flash has all the info you need.

Read the tutorials and you should figure it out quite easily without needing to purchase a book.
