How hard would it be to design a webpage like anandtechs
Obviously not the same what i am talking about is the quality and professional look it has compared to a site like Gus the Ragmans homepage -
Is this something I can do using Frontpage or a similar program?

And as I know Rossman is gonna show up in this thread I will say hi before he does

Hi Ric 😛

So which web host did you sign up for?

I'm not at all a web design person but I do have a suggestion on where to start.

Use either FrontPage or purchase the EasySite template for $5, that's a ONE TIME fee of $5 and you can use it unlimited times. For HTML n00b's like me, that template is a lifesaver!

Creativity and a good knowledge of graphics/HTML/web page layout and design will get you a long way. If you really want to do something like this, don't use FrontPage. I used it when I was first learning website design, but I realized it's a piece of crap.

Dreamweaver is AWESOME... I use it like an advanced notepad, learn CSS, and learn HTML... after that it's all up to your creativity. Try photoshopping your design, and then chop it up with slices. Thats how I made this site Text

FrontPage is terrible. I use Adobe GoLive. I think it great, but I'v never tried Dreamweaver.

I remember the days when Hot Metal was so awesome. We've come a long way.

FrontPage for new users, DreamWeaver is about the same. I used DreamWeaver in school for a web project, worked smoothly. FrontPage has its own issues, you have to deal with them, it has a good layout for new web programmers. Just learn html/css and your set. 🙂

dont use WYSIWYG editors.

if you want to be true, learn proper html and just code it up in a text editor.

I have never had issues with it - never used deamweaver or anything.

photoshop is good for initial slicing - but thats it.

I use Dreamweaver for the basic html and do php myself and graphics in photoshop. Graphic wise the site isn't complex at all, but coding might be a different story.

Doesn't that take forever with more complex sites?

Ahhh we are still researching - I move in spurts either all at once or not at all 🙂
I like your site design ross - acually I like the basic look much better than fatwallet

An AnandTech-like site isn't really that hard; the last iteration was just a variant on a template, and it worked just fine.

I concur. But I use DW and notepad, and some PSD if i'm lazy.

Dreamweaver > *

Seriously, from editing to major work, it is the tool of choice. If you do yourself a favor and buy a book on how do use it, you will slowly be introduced to coding, which is ideal for thsoe that would get board with an HTML book.
