are you an anesthesia resident? that's actually one of my top choices so far (I'm a 3rd year right now)...how do you like it?

I don't know where do you guys get the numbers from. Not sure about other locations but down South here, if you are making over 50K (with degree), you are doing well.

I have a BS and an MBA with 10 years experience and I haven't make over 100K.

250K a year as an employee? Keep on dreaming.

I'm noticing a trend here... the people who are still in school and about to get their degree think that they're going to make BIG BUCKS right out of school, while the people with the degree and the experience know that that's not going to happen.

Well my uncle works for an accounting firm and he graduated from a community college and is easily making a triple digit income. He is in his mid 30s now. At his job, people acutally need to have skills or they'll get fired. People watch how others perform and if they don't, they're out of a job.

The thing is, I don't want to be "average" in my class. I want to be in the top 10 and I think its quite achievable. I'm going to UCF and everybody knows the reputation Florida schools have in terms of parties...

I've gone to parties maybe once every other week in high school and it proved pretty disasterous for my high school gpa and it didn't help that I was in IB...and so I'm stuck at a third rate school...I don't want something like this to happen after college, I don't want to work at a third rate firm...

MBA's graduating from top B-schools and who enter investment banks as associates make at least 200k guaranteed compensation...

if it was more than a dream for most people, most people would make 250K a year.

the reality is if you have the resources and time to go to school, the personality, connections, brains, and single-mindedness to work your way to the top, and you do not value family, free time, emotional growth, or fun, then yes, you can make 250K "easily."

but those are some big if's. most people live normal lives and drive toyotas.

Therre are different kinds of partying.

When I was a Sophmore, there was a girl on my floor who was pre-med. This girl went out partying almost every single night. Needless to say, she did badly in most of her pre-med classes, and had to transfer to some state school in Florida.

Succeeding in life is all about getting your work done in a timely manner, and delaying gratification.

Its all about priorities!

if youre a lawyer, and you work 4 hours a day and take 5 days off every year, you make $360k a year before taxes
of course the only 5 days off a year is unrealistic

a friend of mine is a lawyer and he makes something like $250/hr

I don't think it's hard to make $250k/year IF you're in the right profession w/ the right connections, but it probably won't happen 'til you're like 40.

For me, I see 40 as half my life being over. I want the big bucks NOW when I can actually use them. When I'm 70 and immobile all I want is food and a TV.

you probably mean he bills $250/hr which, depending on how long he's been there, the partners probably take $150-$200/hr and he gets to keep the rest. Unless of course he is a partner.

I was going to say anesthesia. I know a guy working in a little town on the Iowa/Nebraska border banking about 600k a year as an anesthesia doc. What's their malpractice insurance run a year though?

My best friends wife has had offers up up to $250,000 being a nurse anethsetist in VERY hard up hospitals that are in desperate need of those staff. That's not a bad deal. Basically you take a 4 year nursing program, work a year or two in an ICU for experience, then take the CNA program for another 3 years and make anywhere from $100,000 to $250,000 depending on market.

She'll be 27 when she's done. That's not too rough of a lifestyle.

Lets see lets see....

1) You certainly don't need $250K to keep your family out of the ghetto. Hell, you can do that with $30K.
2) You can party in college and still do well. My roommate has a 3.9 in chemical engineering, and Drexel is a notoriously hard engineering school, and he parties all the time.
3) $250K is not as easy as these people are trying to make it seem. That's a lot of money right there....I'd say top 1% of the country....if it were as easy as everyone says, that wouldn't be the case
4) IHateMyJob2004 is an idiot. Connections mean EVERYTHING.

Want to make 250k a year = Own your own business or select few careers
Want to make 250k a year = Away from home Alot of the time
250k a year - Away from home Alot of the time = Family Problems

Spending quality time with your children will have a far greater impact on their upbringing than how much you make. I would focus on that instead of an expensive school. You can have a good income with family time in a few fields so it is possible, but I think focusing on making big bucks without looking at some of the "hidden costs" of those jobs is somewhat shortsighted. Children, especially in todays environment, need every little bit of time they can get with their parents. Good luck with your schooling!

Seriously, 250K/yr puts you in the top 1/5% of income earning in the US. Its unrealistic to expect to make anywhere near that until you're well into your career. Even doctors who make close to that upon graduation are usually in their early 30s before they start making $$$ (Ill be 30, currently 27 and making 42K as a resident). That being said, as an Anesthesiologist, working 40 hrs/wk at 30 and pulling in near a half million/year is a deal Ill take every time 🙂

^ 27 would be too old for me. Too much of your prime years gone.

I honestly don't understand some people's dreams. I won't mind working until I retire just to make a decent salary and provide for my family, $250k/year is not necessary. I will enjoy life by living it in the meantime, not waiting for some arbitrary amount of money to be made.

Going to parties in college will have no bearing whatsoever on your salary as a graduate. If anything, it would make you more likely to make more money because you can meet people at those parties that might become friends who go off to start businesses and can offer you opportunites there.
its all about who you know 🙂 getting to tknow those people and having the initiative to keep in touch with them all enough to form a working relationship is what gets people places ive noticed...

like the old saying: its not what you know, its who you know

HAHAHAHAHAAH.... Not a chance. That's mostly a myth. When I have to recomend someone for my company, I have to know htey will succeed. If your my friend or buddy, I will smile to you, but my superior gets the truth. If you arn't a good choice for employment, our friendship will not get you hired. Sorry!

the who you know statement is true. it gets you in the door. Many times, if you don't network, you won't be as successful
