How hard is it to get a job at the FBI?

If I had a law degree and a BS Econ?

I'm 20 right now, will graduate with my BS Econ when 21, will have my JD by 25. After that, it's up for grabs; right now, I am thinking either an LL.M. program, try for the Air Force, or try for the FBI.

The law degree will really help you out. Here's some info for ya.

To qualify as possessing the law skill, the candidate must first qualify under the Law Program and have a JD degree from a resident law school.

Not very if you have a technical degree. I interviewed with the guy out here on a referral before I had a job and he said he would have hired me on the spot if I was 23...

I think you have to be 23 to be a special agent.

To carry out its mission, the FBI needs men and women who can fill a variety of demanding positions. To qualify as an FBI Special Agent, you must be a U.S. citizen, or a citizen of the Northern Mariana Islands, at least 23 and not have reached your 37th birthday on appointment. Candidates must be completely available for assignment anywhere in the FBI's jurisdiction, have uncorrected vision not worse than 20/200 (Snellen) and corrected 20/20 in one eye and not worse than 20/40 in the other eye. All candidates must pass a color vision test.

Special Agent applicants also must meet hearing standards by audiometer test. No applicant will be considered who exceeds the following: a) average hearing loss of 25 decibels (ANSI) at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hertz; b) single reading of 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hertz; c) single reading of 35 decibels at 500 Hertz; and d) single reading of 45 decibels at 4000 Hertz.

Candidates must possess a valid driver's license, and be in excellent physical condition with no defects which would interfere in firearm use, raids, or defensive tactics.

Applicants must possess a four-year degree from a college or university accredited by one of the regional or national institutional associations recognized by the United States Secretary of Education.

It is a pretty involved process that takes quite a bit of time. Upwards of two years to go thru the application procedure.

Mid 30's to mid 40's and the highest you can get up to GS13 I believe (dunno if that is for field agents though) which can pay pretty well. But even at GS13, which probably takes many many years, you could be making a very similar amount of money right out of law school if you play your cards right.

It also may be adjusted for COLA or other reasons depending on where you work. However, it will only be adjusted up, never down.

Most people getting JDs that get paid less than $50k out of law school are those doing pro bono work or are public servants.

I got fired from a job once when I was 15. : (

 

Yeah it's an involved process, but I'm willing to bet there will be many many more jobs available in the coming years (at least if GWB gets reelected). The amount of money being spent on national security (not just the military) is staggering, and I'm sure much of it will go to agencies like the FBI and ATF and Customs.

You need to be in good shape (metal and physical), not too young or old (between 23 and 37), have a college degree, clean record (extensive criminal and background check).

It will help alot if you know another language or two fluently. Right now, if you know how to speak the languages of the Middle East (Iraq, Iran, Syria, ect) well and have all the mentioned above, you will get in for sure.

I know because I applied for a translator position for the FBI last year and they kept asking me to apply for the Special Agent position.

BTW, if you want to make alot of money, don't bother to work for the goverment. You won't be in the poor house but no bling bling for sure.

Your benefits are great, though. And once you're no longer able to perform the duties of special agent it's almost certain you'll get a cushy job making more money in another area of federal law enforcement. That's how the government works.
