How hard is it to really drive there? Everyone I have talked to (primarily my parents) have said that it is a pain in the ass. I am coming from scranton, PA (about 2 hours north of philly) and want to go there because of the extremely cheap jetblue airfare. Should I just pay 200 more to fly out of scranton?

It's really not that hard to drive to, depending on the day of the week, and the time of day. You will have to contend with traffic and tolls. It will probably take 2.5 -- 3 hours.
Are you driving yourself there?
Where are you going to park?

park at newark airport and bus it to JFK
parking is cheaper at newark and the bus isn't that much

Depends on the time of day. Taking the Cross Bronx is a bitch during rush hour. If there is a Yankee game, don't take the Major Deegan. If there is a Met game, you might get caught in Grand Central traffic. They are doing construction on the Tri-Borough so it might get backed up too.

Since you are out of town, I won't complain but there are so many idiots out there that don't have EZ-Pass which makes it really hard on the guys that do since they block the EZ-Pass lanes all the time. If you had EZ-Pass, it might save you a few minutes too.

If there is a flight to LaGuardia, take that one instead.

It's really not that bad. But its a pretty sucky airport, and you'll probably make up the $200 and then some in parking costs. Alternatively you could park at one of the nearby hotels and they'll have free buses going between the airport and the hotels.

You'll really love landing at JFK..... all the runways are too short, so they practically land on the water before getting to the airport, and have to actually pull up to get over the buildings on far rockaway right before they get there. You'll probably spend a good 10 minutes less than 25 feet above the water, close enough the plane actually gets turbulence from the waves, and yes, you can get seasick on a plane.

BTW, double check your Jetblue fare. They generally are not that great, they just look great initially because they list the price for a 1-way trip, while everyone else lists round trip.

JetBlue only flies out of JFK.
Your best bet is to take the Van Wyck. At least, everytime I've been there (a lot of times) it's been fast enough. Plan a LOT of extra time, mostly for traffic but also for security and the like.

Hey I'm taking a JetBlue flight outta JFK this Tuesday! Just thought I'd share. I'm heading to Ft. Lauderdale. 'course I live in NY, so getting to JFK and LaGuardia aren't big deals to me.

Ah, that I've done before, while I lived in FL actually. Bahamas are much nicer because it is a (relatively) dry heat.

LOL...you must mean LGA, because JFK's are 14,500ft, 11,350ft, 10,000ft, and 8400ft as opposed to LGA's two 7,000 footers; one which sits out over the drink on stilts.

Yeah. I was thinking the same. You must be talking LGA. You fly so low to the water, you can see all the Rikers prisoners playing their Playstations in their cells.

I've flown 3 times, twice from JFK and once from Albany international. Really nothing to it, follow the signs and you'll be okay. Trickiest part is finding your car again after you've parked, I'm horrible with parking garages in general though.

The reason the airfare is so cheap is that there is no connecting flight to my destination (SFO). I have looked around and anything local will cost upwards of 460, while flying out of jfk only costs 230 with jetblue. If I will actually be driving in the city from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, how bad should that be? Am I looking at traffic any worse than 2 hours to get through the city (I will be driving through jersey)?

give yourself an extra 1-2 hours driving time from nyc to jfk. and give yourself 2-3 hours extra prior to the flight. so, if it's a 4 hour drive, give yourself 5 hours extra time.

nyc has extensive traffic reports, you'll find plenty of info on driving conditions. when does your flight leave?

edit... 1 to 4 PM huh... OMFG, you're a dead man.

I go to JFK everyweek, the problem is Jamaica, the town before JFK is always slow down, remember after Whitestone bridge open you eyes to the signals and after Mets stadiums keep going to JFK, the big headache is coming back.

I am planning to leave scranton at 11, but if that time is bad should I leave earlier, later, what?
