How hard is it to change a notebook hard drive?

It looks like it has some sort of thin paste keeping it on. I think it will stick to the new one if I take it off--I guess I'll give it a shot. That shouldn't interfere with anything, yeah? What do you think it might be for?

Maybe to protect from shorts or to help carry the heat away - hard to tell.

So after installing the new hard drive (with transplanted black film on the bottom of the HDD), it seems to be working fine. The hardest part was definitely disassembling without breaking anything--the disassembly manual IsLNdbOi posted was invaluable there. And I really appreciate all the tips, Zepper, bruceb, and others. Thanks so much for the help you guys! :)
